EXCLUSIVE: HOLDING BIKE THE YEARS..
Ron still on 1944 cycle
By Julian Gavaghan
CYCLING fanatic Ron Holloway and his trusty machine are still going strong - after an amazing 62 YEARS and 150,000 miles together. Ron, now 81, paid 30 shillings (£1.50) for the secondhand BSA bike way back in 1944. And since then he's clocked up the equivalent of six trips around the world. The retired metalwork teacher, who still uses his bike to visit the shops every day, told The People: "It's still perfect. "I've had three new saddles and several wheel rebuilds but it's lasted well. I never considered buying another one."For 35 years, Ron cycled 10 miles a day between his home in Spalding, Lincs, and the school where he worked.
The grandad, who is married to Bessie, also spent much of his free time taking part in races or just going for a ride - often covering 90 miles in a day. Today, Ron still swears by his trusty BSA. He said: "You can get around town easily and don't have to worry about parking."
A spokesman for Raleigh UK, which took over BSA, said: "We've known of people owning our bikes for up to 50 years.
"But going strong at 60-plus is brilliant." And hopefully the wheels will keep spinning for a while yet.
