Topic: Sinfield and the Schism Posted: September 28 2006 at 17:11 |
The past few eeks I have delved into the extensive articles, haikus, lyrics, and poems indluded on Peter Sinfield's website.
On the webiste, Sinfield features a number of news artciles written about himself, his work with King Crimson, PFM, and ELP. After reading thre articles, I have arrived at several conclusions.
First, Sinfield admired Lake more than Fripp, for Sinfield collaboarted with ELP throughout the hiehgt of their careers. Moreover, he worked with other prominent artits on ELP's Manticore label, like PFM (see Photos of Ghosts).
What do you think of the enmity between Fripp and Sinfield?
BTW, I rather have one of the best lyrcists of the 20th Century on my side than someone who can perform innovative tricks with a guitar.

I'd really rather have one of the most innovative guitarists of the 20th century on my side. I don't consider Sinfield THAT great. Some of his ELP lyrics are kind of cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I think he's good and one of the best lyricists of progressive music. But I really haven't delved deep enough in his lyrics, so who am I to decide.

You've just had a heavy session of electroshock therapy, and you're more relaxed than you've been in weeks.

Could you name some of his best lyrics?

I don't think that Pete's occasional (failed) attempts to write "commercial" lyrics should be held against him. You gotta make a buck now and then. The more you go through his website, the more impressed you have to be. I have never really felt bad knowing that Fripp and Sinfield will not collaborate again the way I feel about, say Pink Floyd or Genesis, because Fripp has lost any trace of the pastoral, fantasy-influenced muse that once graced King Crimson. They simply couldn't find a common ground. I would immediately buy just about any future album that had Sinfield involved, simply because there's been nothing for many years. On the other hand, Fripp has made me wary over the last few years, but one has to take into account the fact that he's released so much more product.
