Topic: Replacing LaBrie Posted: September 27 2006 at 10:21 |
Seems many non-DT fans have a problem with LaBrie's singing.
I can see that point so I ask, who would be a better fit with the band. You must admit that LaBrie has a great range and can sing with tremendous emotion. In my opinion, few could match his talents.
My suggestion for an alternative:
Russell Allen of Symphony X

Agree with Russell Allen, though I love him in Symphony X and I wish he stays there. Another suggestion would be Daniel Gildenlow (PoS), but the best would be Jorne Lande (Ark). What a voice, what a range, what intensity !!!

I wouldn't dream of a replacement. Those who would like DT if it weren't for LaBrie can listen to Liquid Tension Experiment. As much as I love Russ Allen as a vocalist it just wouldn't sound right if he was singing the DT material. I really wonder how many there are for whom LaBrie is the only sticking point for being a DT fan; most detractors I've spoken with on these forums have a lot more problems with the band than just his voice. You'll find the majority of fans really enjoy his vocals, I think.

Replace him. Replace all of them, in fact, hopefully with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, a band with much more clever use of metal elements.

Perhaps, if LaBrie were replaced, I'd find DT a more pleasant listen... However, I doubt it somehow, as the issues I have with the band aren't only related to their vocalist. Therefore, I don't think that changing the singer would really help me lke their music more... though some of the suggestions here were not bad at all. Jorn Lande seems quite a good proposition... And what about Geoff Tate?

Tate is still a good singer, but his golden years are behind him. His tone would'nt fit DT's music, in my opinion. John Arch, maybe, even Ray Alder, or that guy from Tiles I can't remember the name... hell, I'd even go with King Diamond over Labrie any day !!!

Agreed. The 'whole' of DT are greater than the sum of the parts...

I have be known to knock Labrie in the past but I think I always expected too much from him. his voice live is sometimes a little hit and miss but his studio work and mostly his side projects show his brilliance without question. Personally I don`t believe Dream Theater is the best place for Labrie anymore I don`t think their bombastic style shows us just how well emotionally Labrie can convey his voice.Dream Theater don`t provide the scope that labrie knows how to compliment ... listen to the Amazing work he did on Leonardo The absolute Man for proof , the guy is an artist !

I have to agree. First, he rarely writes any lyrics, so it must be harder for him to feel what he is singing. Second, I think I am not mistaken if I say he is being told what to do by his bandmates most of the time. In such conditions, he may be doing what he does the best he can, however restrained he might be by DT's style.

I'm one of those people who enjoys the musicianship of DT but not the singer. In " Change of Seasons ", DT does a cover medley and Labrie is very mediocre to downright annoying in the vocal parts of the medley.
But I'm just one opinion among many.

I don't see any problems with Labrie. He fits the overall of the band
that does a good job when they are inspired and sometimes fails to be
good in doing clichè or repetitive things.

LaBrie is great, but maybe Geddy Lee or Devin Townsend would make it.

Mediocre??? He sings awesome Perfect Strangers, and is a very difficult song to perform.

It would be interesting to hear Russell Allen, Edu Falaschi or Geof Tate sing for DT, but I think LaBrie is doing a good job.
He actually had vocal lessons before Octavarium was released.
In fact he has even gotten better with time, his vocals on Octavarium are top notch.

Well to be honest I'd have left LaBrie where he is- I've never felt his vocals were poor. He's not my fave singer ever but I don't have a problem with his voice either. Not being a connoisseur of prog metal (not really that much of a fan) I wouldn't know who to replace him with anyway, but it needn't be done imo. I prefer his voice to Russell Allen's.

i don't agree with Jorn Lande replacing LaBrie... he's more of a power metal performer... Tate, better, still, his voice fits better to more intellectual music like Ryche's material...
