Do you know, off the top of your head, what four members comprise the original Soft Machine? Extra credit - why did they become a three piece?

Original line up 1967:

Daevid Allen-Guitars, Vocals

Kevin Ayers-Bass, Vocals

Mike Ratledge-Organ, keyboards

Robert Wyatt-Drums, Vocals

I am not sure why Allen left, but Kevin left because Mike & Robert were very interested in jazz & Kevin did not agree with their interest.

So Hugh Hopper was recruited to replace him on Bass.(Hugh Hopper was previously their roadie)

Nice one Alexander, Daevid Allen was refused entry back into England from France when the Softs went there, '67 I believe, and Daevid went on to form Gong a couple years later. Not much from this period of the band, I had a couple tunes on 'Triple Echo' by Soft Machine by them, but that's on vinyl somewhere.

Ahhh, I would like to beg the differ that there were four members in the original Soft Machine...

They did happen to have a fifth member by the name of Larry Nolan who played guitar at a few of their early gigs and then left...

Whooh, , yeah... I read too much...

David left because he went to france but couldn't return because of Visa complications. It was there where he formed Gong.
