First of all go here:

And now for this:

This is what Black Velvet posted abuot an Estonian band Ne Zhdali:

"Well... I think it is about time for my next recommendation. While flicking through some pictures of my holiday through Russia and Estonia I was reminded of a band I discovered in the heart of Estonia, Tallin. While wandering the streets of Tallin I stumbled upon a basement second hand CD and vinyl store. Having not done much research on Estonia prog before venture off into these lands I decided to ask some of the locals for advice, and where better to ask than an underground CD store. Communication was hard by I was eventually able to get across I like more avant-progressive music. And through their kind recommendations I ended up with the band Ne Zhdali.

"NE ZHDALI is a 6-pieces musical band basically located in Tallinn (Estonia). Their undefined style is a combination of different personalities, musical tastes and influences. Their music has amazed people for its enormous optimism in the time of apocalypses ? . On stage they are bursting with wild energy exploring their physical and mental capacities.

They started in 1987. Their original and fresh approach to the music made them popular in the underground Soviet scene. In 1989 they first went to the West where in Holland they recorded their first album (Rhinoceroses ?). Since that time they've played over 15 tours in more then 15 countries of Europe, played festivals in Canada, and toured in Japan, always welcomed with big enthusiasm.

The music of the band is basically and instinctively oriented on expressive rhythmic structures which they call"rhinoceroses" and on small folky tunes coming from everywhere in the world. There are some other things in their music but too hard to define."

If you are interested there is a more indepth explaintion with in the rest of this page.

www.nomansland-records.de/nml/whatever.html

Also people will be able to sanple their music here

nz.tpt.edu.ee/music/Ne%20Zhdali/

See what you think... a more than worthy band for addition in my opinion.

This is a bit off-topic, but I'm going to Estonia (Tallinn) tomorrow. Hopefully I'll find some interesting record stores. Does anyone know any? Smile

I forget who of our friends here is Estonian, but Adam (Black Velvet) was there as he said and maybe he'll be able to tell you which stores there are.

Latvia? Is that, like, in Middle East or something?Confused

Joking aside, check out Neglected Fields, especially their sophomore effort "Mephisto Lettonica". Excellent keyboard-driven extreme prog, technical, original stuff! Also, if you would like to find non-prog Metal, you might want to find out something by the Folk Metal band Skyforger, which do Latvian ethno-folk expired heavy music, which is not that extreme.

As for the Latvian prog scene, it is D.E.A.D.

I bought Zodiac's album in 1980s. When I bought it, I didn't know they came from Latvia LOL

Olive Mess is also a Latvian group. Of course, I own this group's album.

Sometimes I see Latvian's progressive rock bands' names. However there's few bands in comparison with neighbor country Estonia. In my opinion, Lithuania is harder to find any progressive rock bands. Embarrassed

Well as for CD/vinyl store in Estonia there is one good one inside the old city walls, this is where I was album to pick up some Ne Zhdali. But this is very hard place to find, I'm not totally sure of the exact location but I think it could actually be down in somebodies basement. There were some people jamming in the room next door. They have some nice progressive vinyls, with a limited selection of CD's. So I must wish you luck with finding this place. In the newer part of the city, they have a chain store called 505, some are really good but others have nothing of interest. I cannot remember how the one in Tallin is. But one of the ones in Russia was very good. Also Just a little problem with that store is they are all fake copies, which is the case of a lot of the areas around this part of the world. Real CD's seems ot be quite expensive around this area for some reason.

Now on topic, as for the lativan scene there is only one band I know of hailing from these areas. I wrote this Bio up a while ago, I hope it is of some help. Also feel free to use it for this site as they have no Bio.

Olive Mess

In November 1998 Denis Arsenin (Bass), Edgar Kempish (drums) and Alexey Syomin (guitar) played their first joint rehearsal, leading to the formation of the Latvian band OLIVE MESS. The group named themselves in honour of the French 20th century composer Olivie Messian. For two years the band remained a three piece. Regularly performing at the music club called “Saxophone”, where they would play covers of King Crimson along with many of their own compositions.

In March 2001 the group released their first recording “Live without Audience” which pretty much acted as a demo. With the track “1572 (part II)” we start to see the group’s interest in Medieval French history. With the compositional basis formed around “St. Bartholomew’s day Massacre” occurring on August 23, 1572.
Later in 2001, the remaining members joined the group; including Ilze Paegle (classical trained soprano singer), Lilija Voronova (keyboards) and Sergey Syomin (Archlute, Baroque guitar). Now a full band the group prepared to start recording for their album “Gramercy” under the French label Soleil Zeuhl. The album consists of 5 long compositions. OLIVE MESS encompasses many elements in to their music; shifting between traditional medieval folk music and passages of complex avant-garde which hint strongly towards their King Crimson and Univers Zero influences. The album consists of 5 long compositions with Lyrics mainly focus on historical events in medieval France.

Well worth the investigation for those looking for something adventurous and highly original
