Topic: "Foreign" languages singers Posted: July 24 2006 at 18:02 |
Hello, I created this topic because I noticed that whenever a poll about the best singer or something is created, all of the choices are english-speaking vocalists like if there wasn't other great singers. I happen to think that many of the vocalists I really love do not sing in english. So who are those great "foreign" vocalist in your opinion? We can see that as a tribute to those ignored greats. I'm gonna mention Serge Fiori from Harmonium because I don't know if his name will pop up and his voice is beautiful. Listen to Harmonium en Tournée to see how it sounds even better live.

Thumbs up for Francesco Di Giacomo (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso) too. I really like how he uses his voice.

Czeslaw Niemen (RIP) was one of the greatest vocalists, in my opinion. Sang in Polish. Had an incredible voice and a very emotional manner of singing. One can appreciate it without understanding the language.

I actually love Clepsydra's Aluisio Maggini - although I bet I'm the only one given his idiosyncratic english pronunciation.

Almost everyone mentioned already are great!
Serge, Francesco, Michele, Jonsi, Willy, the lead singer in PFM...
I would like to add Leonardo Saso from Locanda delle fate. What a theatrical voice he has. Also, Demetrio Stratos from Area. I only heard his voice in Carnascialia, but I got an impression of his voice and let me craving for more.

I think that there are much more foreign good vocalists than english. Italians, for example, are better singers as a general rule. French are better as well. Talking about english speaking vocalists only Gabriel, Andersons, Hammill and Lee come to mind immediately.

I really like his voice too, very expressive. I also like Robert Amirian of Collage.

Tord Lindman formerly from Änglagård, it's a shame he only had vocals on a few tracks and is no longer with the band.

I'm so happy to see that someone knows and appreciates the late, great Augusto Daolio from I Nomadi. They're only marginally related to prog, but they were (indeed, are - they're still very much active, though with a different singer) a great band, one of those I grew up with in the '60s. In some ways, he was even better that Francesco Di Giacomo - who, as you all rightly said, is all too often forgotten in best-vocalist polls. Of the younger generation, I think Mariusz Duda of Riverside is really a great singer, and his English skills are remarkable. But how come no one mentioned hot'n'sexy Gildenlow? You're going to break Flossy's heart...
