I've been listening to some Genesis lately and have fallen in love with the organ sound Tony Banks uses at the beginning of Watcher of the skies, The Knife, and the end of the Musical Box.

What kind of Organ is this? Hammond? Mellotron?

Originally Tony Banks uses a Mellotron Mark 2 (violin section) for the intro of Watcher Of The Skies in the studio. In my opinion Tony Banks uses a Hammond organ during The Knife and at the end of The Musical Box.

In fact, that's the two combined together for "Watcher of the Skies".He play Hammond organ(L100) with his left hand and Mark II Mellotron with his right with the 3 violins/brass/bass accordian sounds. For "the Knife",it's Hammond that he play,he used the mellotron 3 violins only in the second part after the flute break. For the "Musical Box" he use Hammond organ only and Hohner pianet trough a fuzz box for the guitar like solo.

That was a pleasure, but I think I made a mistake on my first answer. To be exact, the song "Watcher of the skies" begin with only Mark II mellotron with the 3 violins/brass sound played with the right hand and bass accordian sound played with his left hand on the other keyboard of the Mark II.Later in the intro,he replaced the left hand(bass accordian)with the Hammond organ. He also played the bass pedals of the Hammond organ.

Just for the record, the mellotron is not an organ. Wink

That's what I was thinking but you beat me to it. Definitley 2 keyboards at work there. I saw them open their show up with this in '72 and though the stage was dark (as it always was back in those early Genesis shows then), I could see he was using 2 keyboards for that.
