 Topic: A Weather Report please....

What are Weather Report like? They come up in numerous 'Favourite...' threads, but dont have an entry in the Archives. Who are they, and what's the buzz? Who would you compare them to?

Heavy Weather is a great jazz fusion album. It's an LP from my school dayz...
...which is another great album from a completely different jazzer

yeah they are a really good example of Jazz Fusion. The main players are Wayne Shorter (Saxophone) & Joe Zawinul (Keyboards/Piano) who both played in Miles Davis fusion group. I wouldn't say they were prog, but if you are interested, check out Black Market & Heavy Weather.

One of the 3rd wave jazz rock fusion bands (i.e. post-pre-Miles and post-Miles), with a unique sound then to jazz rock, which didn't quite appear until Miroslav Vitous left them, e.g. around Sweet Nighter and Tales Spinnin' period - remember Alphonso Johnson was the bassman then. Many attempted to imitate WR since, e.g. Koono, and a whole tribute album 2 years ago by various on Telarc Jazz label being amongst the best. Joe Zawinul has moved on very well from WR, with a broader range of world music influences, and certainly worth checking out - check ESC/Escapade Records

Not to mention the subline talents of Jaco Pastorius on bass guitar
I would highly recommend the live '8:30' album, too. Recorded at their creative peak in the late '70's, you will rarely find a group of 4 supreme musicians so in tune with each other.
We are not talking prog here, by any means, but I think any music lover would appreciate the albums so far recommended in this thread.

They are very good especially on a warm night outside, but then again,
so is most jazz. Weather Report is a great band with awesome grooves.
If you like Jazz check them out, Heavy Weather and Black Market are the
ones to get.

Sigh... Weather Report, How I love this wonderful musical organization.
Although WR is not prog, they're f***ing amazing. My favorite albums of
theirs are Sweetnighter (obviously) and even better, Mysterious
Traveller. If you want to hear WR at their creative prime, GET
MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER!!! Although this album doesn't have the great Jaco
Pastorius on it, I think this record has the group at the prime of
their musical greatness. IMO, Heavy Weather just sounds too... too much
like muzak, if you know what i mean. The four albums preceding it,
being Sweetnighter, Mysterious Traveller, Tale Spinnin', and Black
Market, are all great albums to have. If you like lots of guitar
distortion, then this won't be your thing, but don't be mistaken, this
is intense music.

i'm not familiar with brand x... but its somewhere between jazz fusion
and jazz... i think it'd be best described as electric world-jazz, but
as was said above, shorter and zawinul came from the same fusion camp
that mclaughlin and tony williams and chick corea did, so there are
similarities.
