Much smaller indeed, though I have quite a few vinyls. I'm not one for counting, though.

Awfully small. Less than 100 albums that are prog, I think.

Funnily enough, I was going to ask a similar question, but with a slightly differnt slant. I hope Xenoxen won't mind if I tack that Q onto his thread ?
How big does a CD/record collection have to be before it becomes less an archive of music, more a collection of objects?
For example, rough calculation: 1000 CDs, let's say average 1hr per CD, thus 1000hrs of music. That's approx 40 days worth, night and day playing (neighbours permitting!). Say you listen 8hrs a day (which is still pushing it a bit ) - that's around 4 months worth of music - if you only play each CD once! And during that time, you've bought a few more, a bargain here, the new Dream Theater there - and the unmissable remaster of - but you get the idea.
So how big is pointlessly big ?
Mine is a tiddler, for the record, barely over a hundred CDs - but you should see my wish list

Quite a bit smaller a few years ago; however, this genre has totally taken over my music spending lately. As a matter of fact, the entire top row of one of my towers is just about full of nothing but Marillion. And with the live discs Smoke and Mirrors coming out later this year, it's going to expand even more.

I've got about 175 prog albums at this time. I was amazed to realize how big it is. I have been rebuilding my music collection (sadly, my once impressive library of vinyl is gone), and I have more prog than ever before. In the digital age, it is easier to store music, so I have no problem with amassing a ridiculous amount. I like to explore the history of music, and its progressions. So, there is not much I don't find some value in.

Why don't you run this topic as a poll ie 5-10, 10-20,etc? You'll probably get a better response. It is actually an interesting topic to see how us proggers size up!
About 180 by the way!

i never counted the prog subsection, but my total collection is in the vicinity of 500-600 CDs. maybe about 200 prog CDs, i'm guessing. this site has been responsible for an enormous spike in purchasing over the past six months.

hahah... good point... I have more albums that I could ever listen to
at one sitting... but it's nice to pull out an album to suit whatever
mood or musical whim you aim to please.

That's an excellent question. I have about 150 LPs (no record player any more!), 100 cassettes and 150 CDs. I already feel that that is pretty big. I don't have time to listen to all of them properly as much as I'd like.
