I delved into the archives and didn't see a poll like this one, so I'd thought I'd toss this one out. After watching Marbles On The Road this weekend, it's so good to see this band still making great music. What's even better is seeing how well Marbles was received--it has really put this band back on track. Anyway, the Hogarth era has been going on about 16-17 years now, which is a lot longer than the Fish administration. I think Hogarth came in to a band that had had enough of their former lead singer and basically rescued Marillion. Have all the albums been good? No. Together with the rest of the band, however, we've definitely seen greatness.
Lastly, I saw on one poll asking what was the best H era Marillion album, and one person ended theirs by saying, "Marillion just isn't the same without Fish." I would agree. I would also say, "Thank goodness." E |

He would have left after the next album definetely. Fish just had to make his own road, by himself.

I agree. Which is a pity because the Hogarth era does not even come close to the Fish era in terms of quality. IMO of course.

This is where we disagree because Brave, Marbles, and Afraid Of Sunlight are every bit as good (if not better) than Fish era. Misplaced gives them a run, but Brave (especially) is a great album. Just never get tired of it.

He wanted to leave. So, if he had to stay past CaS, it would only be for one album, unless he had a change of heart. On reflection, Marillion were possibly better off without Fish, at least in the long run.

Just trying to convince myself to Marbles and I am longing for Fish although I agree H has better voice. At least Fish era Marillion did not make me want to sleep.
They should come back to Derek and lick his feet and they will rule. They would be great until now!!
So I picked first option, out of pure perversity.

I can't see that early 80s Marillion style being carried over into the
90s unless they would have undergone a big change. But they did
that with Hogarth so...

To be honest if Fish continued with them the hole band would probably have imploded, besides, he was almost completely lost in self pitty on CAS IMO, its hard to see where Fish would have taken them after that.

I believe it was all up to Fish if he wanted in or out of Marillion. In case of him staying in the band it would only have been for a follow up. Nowadays I think itīs quite clear that Fish is missing the Marillios than the band is missing him; H is a great singer and good writer. They are doing fine but I think Fish is missing someone who can write really good music for his often well-written lyrics.

I think there's possible truth in all opinions posted here, but I think the poll is wrong. Fish would have left at some point, be it after CAS or one of it's successors, but option one is true regardless of when he left. At least to me... and Marillion with H are living proof of it....

Fish left because of issues with the band and the music business in general, so I guess he would only be more frustrated if he stayed with the band and would have left after the follow-up... but luckily that didn't happen, because then we wouldn't have had Steve Hogarth, because he would be a milkman at that time

I think that Frank Usher (the principal music writer for Fish) writes stuff that really compliments the type of sound that Fish wants. The rest of his many incarnations of his band also helped create good music to coincide with Fish's beautiful lyrics.

read the excellent biography "separated out" by jon
collins. apparently the band was in deeeeeeep sh*t during the CAS-period (the various reasons are better commented elsewhere) therefore fish leaving was an inevitable thing. Edited by iguana - May 30 2006 at 03:57 |

Well, IF Fish stayed probably they would have gone to the mountains for a month and do some serious talking.
Thereafter probably Steve Rothery would have left and they would have asked Steve Hackett, who had produced one great solo album, one good solo album and one nice solo album and was sliding into the depth of history.
The band would be amazing.....

Agreed. Though Fish really needs a consistant band to work with him. |

[/QUOTE] Actually Frank Usher doesnīt write much music for Fish - Iīd say only a handful of songs during Fishīs solo career, about 8 albums. Personally I like Mickey Simmonds work on Vigil... and Turrell/Daghorns music on Raingods best. But I agree the changes in line-up makes the it difficult to know if youīre going to like the next Fish-album.
