If Phil would have left music all together after say, SEBTP...would he go down in history as one of the top drummers of all time?  I am interested how he would be regarded if post SEBTP had never happened (I know everyone tries to block it out and that is what I ask here).  Is it fair to assess his drumming legacy any less because of later bad pop?  Perhaps so, I don't know.  Does he get a lower rating for selling out?  For having bad taste?  For making bad decisions?  Where would you rank him in the drumming pantheon (and behind whom?)  Please let's speak about his drumming.  No need to slog him further about pop Genesis.

You know, I'm pretty good with acronyms, but I can't for the life of me figure out what SEBTP is supposed to be. It's not a Genesis album, and I don't think it's a Collins solo album, so...what is it?

Phil is a great drummer, not least because he has an identifiable style. I don't think his Pop pap solo career at all affects his drummer's legacy.

Here's a hint, it's in the top 3 rated here.

Phil has always been a great drummer! Even though he took over the vocals after Gabriel's departure, he still wanted to play drums onstage! That was the whole point of the drum duets, and whenever there were long-enough instrumental breaks, Phil would play with Chester Thompson (or in the case of the ATOTT tour, Bill Bruford)!

If you doubt Phil's drumming capabilities in the post-Gabriel era Genesis, get a copy of "The Way We Walk" dvd and watch "Fading Lights" on Disc 1. It's the last song from their "We Can't Dance" album, and it's performed live with just the three studio-members of Genesis, and Phil's drumming in the middle section is just amazing, IMO!

Phil always has been, and always will be a great drummer, and had he quit, he probably would not have gotten better, nor influenced some of today's great drummers!

-Marc.

Give me ' Dance Into The light' any day to most crap outthere. Phil is commercial, yes , but he also contributed to prog in a massive way. As a drummer even Chester bows down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, no wonder I didn't get it. That's SEbtP, not SEBTP.

That, plus I couldn't imagine that as the breakoff point when some of his best drumming was on TotT and W&W.

(also: fifteen exclamation marks do no more for your argument than just the one - which looks shouty and raving enough as it is, you know)

phil is in my opinion one of the best rock and pop musicians. you can dispute about it but it is all you can do about it. to mock on him and critisize always that he made genesis pop is nonsense and snobish. they made such a music they wanted to do. you like it or not. best wishes.

Off topic but..

No need to be a dick about that kind of things. If the message obviously gets across why start whining about bloody grammar?

^ Indeed. Strictly speaking it would be SEbtp. Why would the pound be capitalised?
Anyway, Collins is indeed a great drummer and I would probably rank him in the top 5. His drumming on Genesis Live is exemplary.

Because it didn't get across. When I read a title acronym, I automatically assume that capped words are non-binding words as per Title Case rules and lower-case are binding ones. It's second nature for me to do so.

Also, why shouldn't the pound be capped in the title? It's not a binding word of less than four letters.

Anyone who has been into prog for years recognized the letters SEBTP (especially if the topic is Genesis-related), whether it's SEBTP, SEbtP or whatever, even SEBPT. It immediately springs to one's mind, without a moments hesitation. You're obviously not a dumb man, so stop pretending.
