Topic: Daft Prog Band Names Posted: May 26 2006 at 13:56 |
So what do you think is the daftest name a prog band has come up with?
My choice is Spocks Beard, a great band but what a stupid name, I mean Mr Spock didn't even have a beard (or is it some sort of metaphysical joke)!

Hmm.....tricky one..........do I gleefully give the answer, but in the process "out" myself as a geeky trekkie, or feign ignorance?
There's an episode where Enterprise finds itself in a parallel universe, where, broadly speaking, the goodies are baddies, and the baddies even worse. There, the evil Mr Spock has a beard.......or so I'm told
Personally, I think Spock's Beard is one of the classier prog names.....but not such a great band........

I did wonder if that was the case, one of those episodes where Spock
developed a sense of humour or fell in love (or both).
We could widen the remit to prog bands with plain awful names (I'll stick with Spocks Beard for this too) & Matching Mole.

The name of the episode is "Mirror, Mirror"...Not that I watch ST or anything...There's also an evil version of Kirk in that same episode...Another name for a prog band, sticking with a similar theme? How about "Kirk's Libido"?

I like most prog band names but i find Elp to be kind of boring. This isnt prog but the Butthole surfers is a pretty messed up name.

What do you consider a good band name? I can't think of any band name that isn't stupid if we go along the outlined bands already listed here.

Spock's Beard is pretty goofy. Also, super Furry Animals (although I happen to like them), Uncle Dirtytoes (wtf?), Nice Beaver, Crispy Ambulance, and Bark Psychosis. I think all of them except Crispy ambulance are here in the archives.

"The Beasts of Bourbon" sure as heck are NOT prog, but it's a great name!
(and they really rock!)
I think some of the names in prog could sound daft, but you have to think back to the time of their conception, and what musically or culturally was around at the time.... some of these bands have been around for a pretty long time!

I've heard the story for a lot of bands (Spock's Beard being one of them) that the absurd name they have was chosen quickly because they needed a name for an upcoming gig - the intention is often that they'll think up a better name down the line. Often they end up being stuck with the silly name.

Virtually all band names (except those along the lines of "The Joe Bloggs Band") sound pretty silly if you concentrate on the word(s) long enough. On the other hand, through familiarity, they can sound "normal" to us.
After all, "The Beatles" is a daft name - it's only the ubiquity of the word that stops us thinking "hang on - that's not a real dictionary word".
