If these two were to go head to head in a competition to see who could come up with the most maudlin, self-pitying song, who do you think would win?

I reckon PH would have me reaching for the Prozac marginlly quicker than Mozza, but it's a close call.

What do you lot reckon?

I think you may have had a humor bypass.

Bizzare....not sure I share your view of Peter Hammill. Perhaps a poll in another forum giving the choice between Morrisey and Leonard Cohen might be more the thing?

Is this an attemt to insult or not, Fogwalker? Since you have named yourself after a classic Hammill song, so I'll try to answer your question:

PH wins for me too. The beautiful album Over is more depressing to me than anything Morrisey ever made. Big fan of both (The Smiths much more than Morrisey's mediocre solo albums), and I find most of their music uplifting.
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me

The boy Morrissey is not prozac material, his lyrics are brimming with satire, and humour........maybe a little maudlin in places, but shovel loads of reality!
I mean after decades. or hundreds of years of guys singing about the earth shattering beauty of a lady to woo her, how much more real can you get with Morrissey's "You're the one for me Fatty!"

Classic stuff!

PH............. well, when I feel bad, I mean REALLY bad I stick on some PH.............and I think to myself "pull yourself out of it girl, this bloke has REAL troubles" and I am bouncing around like a bouncy thing in no time!

reverse psychology!

Nah. I like both Hammill and Morissey - a lot as it happens - that's how I can allow myself the luxury of a little irreverence at their expense!

Over is indeed a beautiful album - but I do find the deeply personal lyrics hard to listen to at times.

Morrsey is somewhat more knowing and ironic. Still, I do find it trying when he's asking "Why doesn't anyone love me?" for the seven hundredth time.

I'd have to go for the man who wrote a great song about being knocked down and killed by a ten-ton truck.

I dont find Hammill maudlin at all. In fact I never found Morrissey or The Smiths in the least bit depressing either. Both men are masters of the written word, and that's coming from someone who often ignores lyrics completely.

Nick Drake said the brightest light comes from the darkest places (I paraphrase), in his song 'Fruit Tree'. I think he was right.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

What's so great about Morrissey's lyrics is that they're often so sad and funny at the same time.
