Yes, another "voice" thread from somebody who unfortunately can't play, but who still loves to sing and to hear great singing. I remember there was another such thread last year, when I joined the forum, but it died very early (I don't know why, but interesting threads seem to last much shorter than band-bashing ones ).
I love instrumental music as well, but a great vocal performance can really touch me, move me and stick firmly in my memory. In prog there are a lot of outstanding vocalists, even though sometimes the best performances can come from people who are not blessed with the traditional "beautiful voice", but who can really express a wide range of feelings through their singing. As I said in another thread, I love a variety of vocal styles, and my favourite vocal performances range from dramatic, heavy rock tour de forces (or is that tours de force?) like Ronnie James Dio's in "Stargazer" to the witty, understated singing of Richard Sinclair in "Share It".
Now, what are your favourite vocal performances - and, most important, WHY do you like them?

Gentle Giant's On Reflection - the vocal polyphony simply is as good as they come. A masterpiece of rock singing, although the style is originally not rock music.

You should listen to Pain of Salvation, this vocalist has one of the most expressive voices I've ever heard, it's amazing, all of their albums show a wide range of feelings. The Mars Volta vocalist also expresses a lot through his singing, although it's mostly the same odd feeling he conjures he's still amazing. Opeth is good too, lots of expression in this guy's voice, as well as Maynard from TOOL. I happen to like Zack de la Rocha a lot too, he used to sing in Rage against the machine, his singing was incendiary, so much rage, this kind of stuff can move the masses.

Peter Gabriel - 'The Musical Box' from 'Genesis Live', emotive and sensible vocal performance.
Chris Farlowe - 'Rope Ladder To The Moon' from 'Colosseum Live' unique, powerful bravura interpretation.

Great ones like Gentle Giant and Pain of Salvation have been already mentioned.
If expressive vocalist are discussed Peter Hammill can't be missed.
Queen had also some great vocal performances like The Prophet's Song.

I really like Chris Farlowe's performance on Three Score and Ten by Colosseum - some might find it corny but I think it's empassioned and dramatic.
I agree with Ghost Rider about Stargazer and, talking of Rainbow, Graham Bonnet gives a incredibly powerful performance on Danger Zone.

I was really into metal music in the past so there are a lot of performers I adore and a lot of really amazing performances to point out, but for now I think there is just one song that I think everyone should have heard, because of the amazing vocal performance.
It's In the Woods - Mourning the Deaath of Aase by Synne Larsen. This song is in the album "Three Times Seven on a Pilgrimage", just to avoid any mix-up, because another, quite different version of the same song is in the album "Heart of the Ages"

"The Wall", "Reason To Be", "Carry On Wayward Son" by Steve Walsh
Actually, classic Walsh just brings back memories of my childhood. The man sounded great on anything. He just had a fantastic range, a power, but (a the risk of sounding fruity) a sweetness to it. The man could really rock out, but pull in the reins on a tender ballad.
"Surrounded" by James LaBrie of Dream Theater
I seem to always hit the 'repeat' button on this one. To me, it's all LaBrie. His voice does remind me of 80's metal at times, but the guy can flat out sing. He just really stands out on this one.
Now, the Steve Hogarth section:
Yes, I know he's not popular amongst the Marillion purists, and I know he's lambasted at times; however, I experience several 'goos flesh' moments throughout his career with Marillion.
"Easter"- Probably one of Marillion's greatest songs. And brilliant musicianship aside, Hogarth delivers pure emotion. Especially on the last section.
"Cover My Eyes (Pain And Heaven)"- OK, it's pop, but I really enjoy listening to Hogarth on this one. Great range and steady from start to finish.
"The Great Escape"- Hogarth is just all over the place on this one. One moment subdued, the next manic and angry, and lastly soaring highly. Just a great song.
"Afraid Of Sunlight", "Beyond You", "Beautiful"- I picked the more tender songs from Afraid Of Sunlight because these songs just shows a different side of Hogarth. The songs just ache, but are so beautiful. I love emotional vocalists, and the vocals here are so effective that you can share the pain along with him. "Beautiful" isn't so much a painful song, but still a plea for help and still wrought with angst.
"Fantastic Place", "You're Gone" - Pretty much for the exact same reasons as the Afraid Of Sunlight bunch. H has lost something off of his voice, but still very emotional. He begins "Fanstastic Place" a little bit down and almost sounds as if he's bored; however, he really takes it to another world. Probably one of his better vocals from their more recent albums.

Peter Hammill on The Emperor in His War-Room - the "Ghosts betray you! Ghosts betray you in the night! They steal your eye from its socket!" part is chilling and unforgettable - I doubt there's another singer alive who can do that song justice.
Also, Dagmar Krause's singing on Living in the Heart of the Beast is especially astonishing. I understand she's an acquired taste but I can't understand why!

I`ve always liked Thijs van Leer`s qiurky vocals. Probably one of the
few prog artists with formal voice training. On the other end of the
spectrum Mani Nuemeier from Guru Guru has some real wacked out vocals.
Examples : Dagobert Duck`s 100th Birthday, Atom olch, Der Elektrolurch,
Moroso (live ), Ooga Booga, Samantha`s Rabbit, Walking Eating My Hotdog
etc.

I sort of agree, but I also appreciate how they didn't over use her, even when she played a more significant role, it is not as if Amon Duul II's albums revolved around her. She was just nicely placed into the mix.
I am interested in hearing her with the few albums she did with Popol Vuh. Anyone feel like commenting on that.

maybe it's not progressive, but the best vocal i've ever heard is Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) "Child in Time"
