Press Release

ProgresSon Music announces its next three CD reissues:

CONVENTUM: “À l’Affût d’un Complot”, “Le Bureau Central des Utopies”,

and  CHARLES KACZYNSKI: “ Lumière de la Nuit

Montreal, May 16, 2006 - ProgresSon Music Inc. is pleased to announce its next three CD reissues on its Progquebec label. The ensemble Conventum, led by guitarists André Duchesne and René Lussier, pioneers of musique actuelle, inspired itself from contemporary classical “imaginary folklore”, progressive rock and poetry to create a unique style of dense, and elaborate acoustic chamber music. On its first album “À l’Affût d’un Complot”, released in 1977, the group is comprised of a third guitarist, Jean Pierre Bouchard, poet Alain-Arthur Painchaud, violinists Bernard Cormier and Charles Kaczynski, joined by a host of guest artists such as Louise Forestier. This reissue contains the nine original album recordings augmented by seven live bonus tracks, and a 16-page booklet full of text and photos. Conventum`s second album, “Le Bureau Central des Utopies” released in 1979, is a master-works of maturity, rendering homage to the "Centre d'Essai Le Conventum", the music workshop in Montreal where, for 7 years, the group developed its complex acoustic chamber music inspired by the many film themes it composed. This reissue contains the original album's nine pieces with two bonus tracks and a 16-page booklet full of text and photos.

Also, classical and jazz violinist extraordinaire and Conventum member Charles Kaczynski, has reissued his solo album “Lumière de la Nuit” on CD. This album, on which Kaczynski plays over 20 instruments himself, was originally released on vinyl in 1979, and is considered an epic masterpiece of orchestral chamber music. Now involved in composing for and playing in the highly acclaimed Cirque Éloize, Kaczynski will be appearing with this troupe in the Nomade show at the Centre Pierre-Péladeau in Montreal on May 30 and May 31.

These three CDs, as well as ProgresSon’s first 11 releases, which include reissues of the musical works of Ville Emard Blues Band, Toubabou, Contraction, L’Orchestre Sympathique, Pollen, Maneige, and Yves Laferrière, as well as Jérôme Langlois’ new album “Molignak”, are being distributed in Canada by DEP, and are available in music stores or directly through our website at www.progquebec.com. Media personnel wishing to receive promo copies for airplay or review should contact Stephen Takacsy. ProgresSon Music Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting music from Quebec through CD reissues and live concert events such as the Montreal Progressive Music Festival to be held on September 15 and 16 at the Gesu (see www.fmpm.net).

Now this is all very nice, but they should stop reissuing stuff that's already been released on CD;(Maneige's Ni Vent...,Libre-service,Live a L'reveché,Conventum's both albums and Pollen).
Yves Laferrière's album though, was a super dooper big surprise!
Those who enjoy Maneige,Contraction and Toubabou should get this one.
It's an unknown classic!
Here's what I would like released:
1.All the Morse Code albums
2.Both Sloche
3.Frank Dervieux
4.June Wallack
5.Vos Voisins
6.Michel Lefrancois
7.Aquarelle
8.Jacques Rivets(first lp)
9.Solstice(both)
10.Dionysos,Le garnd jeux,Musique de mes amis...

Yeah I know.
But those are bootleg copies.
I own some of Tachika's ''reissues'' namely Eternité,Robert Connolly and Fireballet's Two Two.
Despite the fact that these aren't legitimate and unofficial, they do sound amazingly good, almost like if they were done from the master tapes.
And they come in mini lp sleeves replica.Cool.

Still,I think that some albums needed re-issuing much sooner than those 5 already out on cd re-re-iisues.Confused
The list is just endless, and what do we get instead?
3 Maneige albums that have been out for over a decade on cd,while those who badly needed reissing are still left un issued(the first couple and the later ones)
Both Conventums-no emergency in re-re-issuing them IMHO
Pollen-dito,the kozzak edition was just fine
Now that you're done with all the Kozak/Mezo catalogue, let's hope we'll see some albums that are crying for re-issuing like those I've listed and then some....
You guys are doing a fine job,but I don't think those 5 were that urgent.
On the other hand it's nice to see Contraction,VEBB,Toubabou,Orchestre Sympatique,Laferière and Kascinsky finally out on cd.
What about the other 2 O.S.?
Regards,
The Rock

I can tell you without doubt there is greater demand for the middle period of Maneige than for the final period. The early studio stuff is gated by EMI. We plan to do it all in time.

The early response to these has been quite good though.

Sure, if you already had it, it was fine. The fact is that Pollen is our best international seller. If it didn't need to be done urgently it would be a weak seller. The ones that have been previously on CD (which were all long unavailable by the time we came along) have been among our best sellers. It is important to distinguish between what you personally want and what the market wants. Of course I'd like to do stuff that has not been on CD at all because I have all the Kozak catalog already. But the market is not my personal collection.

Fair enough. I am familliar with all the albums you listed and we have plans towards most of them. As I'm sure you know it's not simply a question of saying "Well I like these ones the best so we'll do those.". That's what Tachika can do but for us it's not that simple. We have to consider:
* Who has the rights? Will they work with us?
* Can we track down the artists? Will they work with us?
* Where are the tapes? If they're missing or destroyed, do we do it from vinyl or do we wait to find the tapes?
* How expensive is this to put out? For a label of our size, to put out nine in a year, some have to be less expensive than others to do.
* How will this sell in Quebec?
* How will this sell internationally?

Yes, and I have to say for many of these the sales prospects are far from certain. Some of the releases we have done like Pollen have allowed us to fund a release like OS or Laffy that, as much as I like them, do not get a lot of attention around the Internet.

[QUOTE
What about the other 2 O.S.?
[/QUOTE]

These won't happen yet, as the later two albums have less commercial potential and the first has not sold strongly enough at this point to make doing the next two a good idea right away.

Funny thing,I was in a local record shop this afternoon, and was talking with other like minded prog freaks, and most of us already own all of the mezzo catalogue.
Most of us basically shared the same opinion;that is, a little frustration with so many great quebec titles not out yet, while some others,(Maniege,Conventum,Pollen) could have waited a bit...
Probably out of selfishness, but nonetheless frustrating.
Another phenomenon I 've noticed lately,a lot of Mezzo CDs finding their way into used record shops for less than 10$ each. That could hurt the sales of your editions,I guess.
I know Aut'chose have contacted you to put out their 3 70's albums but you guys didn't want to put out their third(cauchmar américain),and wanted to put out a compilation instead. Why?
These would have done good I guess.
And Francoeur has mint, still wrapped copies of those lps, ready for re-issue!
They are still trying to find a deal btw.
Regards,
The Rock

Fair enough, but then I would expect that our non-Mezzo titles like Orchestre Sympathique and Yves Laferriere should sell more in Quebec than the Mezzos, but they do not. So I don't know what to say.

Yeah, always a risk.

OK, checked up on the Aut'Chose thing. They have not been in contact with us. A compilation has already been put out by Unidisc a few years back.

L'O.S. and Laferrière are not household name, but I believe Morse Code and Sloche would sell like hot cakes,so would some Octobre and Vos Voisins.
For Aut'Chose,it's Ronald McGregor who told me so,he's the band's webmaster.
Salut.

Our first September release will be an archive by Maneige, which I posted out in the main prog forum in the "Maneige and Conventum" thread. We'll have two more to announce pretty soon :).

Btw,I have purchased an album by a band called Agharta.
What an album!
They released it on their own label, 123jam, or something and it sounds just great!
I thought you guys were gonna put it out.
Oh well,doesn't matter,as long as it's available.
For those who don't know this neat little band, well, they were a cool band playing soft world beat tinged jazz fusion a la Weather Report/Mahavishnu/Metheney/Corea.
They were part of a current that was very popular in Quebec in the late 70's that also eralded Maneige,L'Orchestre Sympatique,Aquarell,Solstice,Syncope,Toubabou,ect...
They released their only (self-titled) album in 1981 and now it's out on CD for the first time ever for all of us to enjoy!
So dig it and dig it!Thumbs Up
