should threads be closed just because they have been done before?

In my opinion not, since their are always new members,
different poll choices and opinions can change as well.

what's your opinion about it?

It depends.
I think that members should take the time to "search" for similar threads before just jumping right in.It would be a good idea to check out any omissions that were highlighted in the previous thread on the same subject,if it was a poll include the missing items highlighted in the "you missed X" type posts.
Obviously we are going to get many repetitions of the same theme with new people joining all the time. However some attempt should be made to make these similar threads useful and interesting for people who have been around the forum for a while. Why poeple can't add reples to already existing polls thus "bumping" them up to the frontpage,is beyond me.

I should close any POLL on a well-worn topic that where the originator has made obvious omissions. However this can stimulate some debate so occasionaly the mistake creates some good
I will close any thread on a topic that has caused problems before and the originator has made no attempt to avoid the pitfalls of the previous similar threads.

I have known there to be two best guitarist poll on three consecuitive pages of Poll section. That is just lazy...

I recently created a new "MikeEnRegalia recommends" thread - I'll create a new one for each new recommendation. But I'll try to add the artist/album to the topic (although that's a problem due to the limited length).

Usually, if a topic is closed for duplication, we will provide a link to the appropriate active thread so the discussion can continue.

but what if you want to add further poll choices?

May some people search, but aren't satisfied with what they find...

so I think not every thread whose topic has been done before should be closed since there might be an extension...

very few threads are ever closed WC. Just because a thread is similar to a previous topic does not mean it will automatically be closed.

In the situation you describe, you could always contact a member of the admin team explaining why you feel the new thread is needed.

Polls cannot be extended. It wouldn't make sense ... you can edit the topic and first post though.

no they shouldn't be closed, People lose interest in replying to posts that have gone for a long while so it is sometimes necessary to create a new thread.
Another emotional suicide, overdosed on sentiment and pride
