Hey, I was wondering what you guys think are some good, easy Prog
Instrumentals for a 4-piece band (keys, guitar, drums, bass) to play. I
wanted my band to play some Dream Theater instrumentals, but for the
most part, DT's stuff is too hard to play atm. So, what do you suggest
we try to learn? (We mostly play Symphonic Prog Metal, but we're open
to just about any kind of Prog really.)

You could select some bits from Tubular Bells to play, and rework them for your line up.

What about Stellar Overdrive by Pink Floyd or perhaps Start by Peter Gabriel.

I was thinking about this one, but what would the keyboardist play? I guess he could play the scales in the beginning and some chords throughout the song... And the keyboardist and I love Camel, so that might be a good idea too... |

Check out Niacin's cover of Red - the organ is the lead instrument there and it works well enough. Maybe the keys and the guitar could both work on the lead but an octave apart, for a truly powerful sound. Alternatively, a four-piece reworking of Peaches en Regalia would be interesting. ![]() |

depending on what you consider hard you could do "The Boys in the Band" by Gentle Giant, or on the other side of things, "YYZ" by Rush.
I agree with Wedding Nails too

Thanks guys! These are some great suggestions -- I'm gonna bounce 'em
off them the guys at the next practice and hopefully we'll come up with
some up with something decent. I'll be sure to post a recording of
whatever we cover when we finish it!

You could try Hell's Kitchen by Dream Theater... that one is probably the least technical DT instrumental

Holy crap, I just listened to wedding nails -- that guitar riff is
awesome haha. I think I'm going to learn this one even if the rest of
the band doesn't =P

ELP - Toccata (Japanese band Gerard have done a brilliant heavy version of this on a CD called 'Keyboards Triangle')
Also Edgar Winter Group -Frankenstein,is a great heavy prog instrumental.
They're not 'easy' though! Are there really any easy prog instrumentals? Edited by richardh - May 07 2006 at 13:16 |
