PRESS RELEASE

On February 8 th 2006,  sadly, the jazz world lost one of the major
contributors to the development of jazz and improvised music here in England and Europe
during the mid sixties to a week before his death.

Working with many different aspects of this creative community from Keith
Tippetts’ small groups, they met at the Barry Summer school with Nick Evans and
Mark Charig, Centipede, Ark and Tapestries, to Robert Wyatt and Hugh Hopper in
the Soft Machine, Brotherhood of Breath, to his own groups quartets, quintet,
the famous Ninesense, and many more. He was a truly individual, professional,
and very creative saxophonist, who will be sorely missed.

On May 9th at the 100 Club many of the muscians who were his friends and
fellow travellors along this road will play in tribute to him. This is only a
selection others not included will be organising further events in his memory.

Saxophonist Elton Dean 10/28/1945-2/8/2006
ELTON DEAN

The British saxophonist Elton Dean died early last week. He was an absolutely
brilliant musician, a good-hearted man, and a friend to all of us at
Cuneiform.  Elton had worked with Cuneiform for years, releasing various solo and
group recordings with us in addition to the dozens of lps and CDs he released on
the British label Hux and other indie labels, including Ogun, Slam, Voiceprint
and MoonJune. Steve Feigenbaum and I last saw Elton perform in Paris in 2004 -
his playing there, as part of Soft Bounds, was nothing short of amazing - he
had continued to grow better with age, and despite poor health.  It was as
though his music was triumphing over his body. Following the show, all of us had
a welcome,  late-night chat session in Le Triton's green room. While we'll
miss the music that infused Elton's soul and served as his driving force,  we
will miss Elton's humanity - his very human and humane good-heartedness - the
most.

If I only I could be there. He was such a great artist, and it's great to see such a wealth of talent pay tribute to his work.
