Topic: US prog metal vs Scandinavian prog metal Posted: April 30 2006 at 00:06 |
Which you think is better representing the sub-genre in quality, progginess and originality ?
In North America the most known are : Dream theater ,Symphony X,Tool,Devin Townsend, etc.
In Scandinavia : PoS,Opeth,Green Carnation,Winds,Evergrey,etc.
I vote for the Scandinavian one!

Anyway, seems like a tie to me. Scandinavia has for quite some time been the perfect place for most proficient, inspired Metal groups, and the progmetal field is not an exception. However, the US progmetal groups, such as Kayo Dot, maudlin of the Well, Agalloch, Atheist, Cynic, Death, Tool, BTBAM, Isis and Pelican, Subterranean Masquerade and others are about just as good as the best Scandinavian progmetal collectives.

Each has its greatest and best bands, so I simply can't determine which is better.
Tie.

Impossible to choose (for me).
Opeth is unbelievable, but DT and Shadow Gallery are pretty impressive
too to say the least. The prog scene would be something totally
different without one of these countries contributing.

US ... Symphony X, Clockwork, Psychotic Waltz, (Planet X)
But nevertheless Scandinavia also offers a lot of great artists ... e.g. Pain of Salvation, Andromeda

North America wins by an inch
the only reason is because there are not sooo many great prog metal Scandinavian bands
I know a lot more from the US

US Prog Metal has had more influence overall and id say it is still a bit better in terms of quality, but Scandinavia is cathcing up fast. I think they need perhaps one more great band to catch up with the USA, Opeth, Pain of Salvation, Andromeda and Meshuggah are all awesome but Pagans Mind doesnt quite do it for me.

I'm going with Scandinavia(which is biased because any time Opeth comes up im gonna pick their side )
Opeth, Meshuggah, Pain of Salvation
I'm not a DT fan at all so that makes my decision much easier
Although most of you are misreading the poll it says North America not just USA, so you can add the Canadian bands in there too.
