Topic: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Posted: November 24 2004 at 20:59 |
I went to the Rock Hall in downtown cleveland today. Oh, what a very very sad experience.
It wasn't sad because it was a bad museum. It was really an amazing
museum, and there were some cool rock artifacts, videos, exhibits, etc.
Unfortunately, prog was barely mentioned!!! I figured I might see some Roger Dean artwork or some mention of Yes, Genesis, King Crimson... nope! Basically nothing.
The one prog band that had a big presence in the rock hall was, you
guessed it, Pink Floyd. They had the two face statues that are on the
cover of The Division Bell and a fromer stage prop of The Wall,
with the "teacher" looming large overhead. The only other thing I saw
was (and this was actually pretty cool) an acoustic guitar formerly
used by Greg Lake, on of Keith Emerson's old hammond b-3s, and a set of
daggers he used to stab it.

I hail from the land of Massillion, Ohio. We live off football, don't come here. I'm probably the only person who ever heard the word prog in my city other than like 2 dudes.

Is Cleveland OH the main home of the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame in the USA?
I ask because one of UK's main TV channels has been running viewer polls for the best bands in various categories over the last couple of months. For instance, (as somebody else mentioned here), prog wasn't mentioned when it came to the section on 70's music, just a dismissive 30 seconds or less of Rick Wakeman on video. The clowns who run these thing are still rewriting the history of rock and dnying some of the truth - why where Clash nominated when Yes or ELP ignored (sales, popularity at the time , whatever, don't seem to be important criteria - and there is still those pundits in power who deem that rock rock'n'roll should be exclusively simple).
I caught 10 seconds of the final show with guest musicians providing the entertainment - e.g. Jeff Beck as part of a Bob Marley tribute, although I missed (what I'm told was a knock out performance by) Paul Rodgers fronting Queen. Anybody catch that one and like to make comment?

I know what you mean Dick..
Its that age old syndrome where most people seem allergic to music that is in any way challenging. Its regarded as nerdish and always will be.
Popularity is often mistaken for quality. Although some of the nominees were predominantly album bands, like Zep and Floyd, it was those who had frequented the singles charts who won the award. Despite bands like Yes and ELP enjoying huge album sales you would be surprised at how many people have never heard of them. I recently asked some work colleagues, all in their early 50's, if they had liked any prog in the 70's. None of them knew what I meant by prog for a start. One of them had heard of Jethro Tull and ELP, they all said they liked Floyd, and the one that knew who Yes were said they thought they were sh!t - despite confessing to never having heard any The reputation of prog, for some, must have preceded itself even in the glory days.
Anyway, folks, we all know what we like!! Sod everyone else, they're the nerds

I think the actual Rock Hall organization is based in NYC, although the hall itself is in Cleveland.

I just turned 16 last summer. I was always a gigantic fan of Pink Floyd. Other bands this site considers prog that i was into before i found it were RUSH, Frank Zappa, Alan Parsons Project and maybe a few more. I was also a huge fan of Todd Rundgren who also was a part of this band Utopia, well i never heard Utopia before and was to "broke" to buy an album so i looked for downloads on the internet. whall searching I found this site and a download for the song "Utopia Theme" one of their best songs. i got hooked to every part of the site and now lsten to many many more bands. and thats how i got into prog. This is the greatest website ever.

I'm knocked out that people your age have taken the time to get to know what prog rock is all about. Its great to know you get so much from it
It proves how out of touch I am. I thought that most prog fanatics were at least 10 years my senior (I'm 35) I dont often take pleasure in being wrong, but in this instance, I'm glad I am.
This website was a great find for me too!!
