![]() Jean Claude Vannier is a French Composer /arranger and most famous for his fantastic arrangements for Serge Gainsbourg's 'Melody Nelson'. In 1972 he composed a long suite for Rock Orchestra, percussion, a string qatuor, a brass section and a choir. Once recorded he played it to his friend Serge Gainsbourg, who wrote a little story inspired by Maurice Ravel's 'L'enfant et les sortileges', about a kid that kills the king of flies and is punished. Unfortunately the record never saw the light of day and had to wait up to 2003 when Vannier finally could release the record.
Now don't judge the record by his cover, this is not a record for kids! The record is 200% Prog, a mixture of Magma (dark brooding athmosphere with a heavy bass line Zappa , for the extraordinary percussion work plus some exotic inspired string arrangements (arabic scales) and some more lighthearted melodies + assorted soundeffects.A Prog masterpiece!

L'enfant assassin des mouches is a favourite album of mine (been in my sig for a long time now), and I have been thinking about reviving discussion on inclusion, as well as bringing this wonderful album to other people's attention.
Here's a track from youtube from the album: [which, incidentally, is my two year old's favourite track in all of my music collection (the only one he ever asks to listen to). It's a great album. My problem is not being familiar with most of his music. Here's another youtube clip from the album (edit, had to fix broken link): While he has avant qualities, I'd like to see him in an art rock sub (Eclectic for L'enfant, though I think that Crossover would fit his overall work better -- lots of chanson). His music is described as French pop at his myspace. Here is the official myspace: http://www.myspace.com/jcvannier Here's is an unnoffical myspace: http://www.myspace.com/vannier for looking into some of his other music (chanson etc.) Love that first tracks Here is the rateyourmusic page: http://rateyourmusic.com/artist/jean_claude_vannier And see wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Vannier This is another very good album of his: L'orchestre de Jean-Claude Vannier interprète les musiques de Georges Brassens It would be shame, I think, for this artist not to find a place here. Too many great artists don't get their due -- even PA worthy ones. ;) I'm glad to belatedly offer my support (Vannier and Sheller have been two of my favourite artists from France over the past months),
This, which was released as a single, is a song I really like that he collaborated on with Gainsbourg and features the lovely France Gall. Edited by Logan - December 07 2009 at 12:50 |

Ah yes, a classic. ......................................... What a great album this is, and very eclectic. "Danse des Mouches..." reminds me so much of Elton John instrumental. |
