Topic: IS prog a mainly male pursuit? Posted: November 22 2004 at 12:47 |
Phil Collins once complained that i the early days of Genesis, the fans were mainly just ernest young men in long coats. mike Rutherford too commented on the fact. So, my question is...is Prog mailny appreciated by males, and why? And, if there are ladies in the forum who discovered Prog, or were they thurned on to it by a male friend. Please note, not a sexist topic, just curious.

Simple-you cant dance to Prog (at a disco, club etc). Young ladies feel they need to listen to pop music so they will recognise the songs at discos and be able to dance to them.
That's why prog rock fans are all lonely, greasy nerds!

come to think of it, there are hardly any females in prog bands either. curved air might have had one. not sure. well they always have females featuring on albums. dream theater have theresea and co on "scenes", pink floyd have clare torry and prolly more. and so on. but as official members there is a dystinct lack of females.

I discovered prog all by my lonesome, when I was about 13, in the form of Yes on the radio. Back when FM radio was good. I've since come to love and appreciate a lot of prog bands, and Yes remains in my top 5.
Why not a lot of women? I think a tremendous amount of it has to do
with our Western, "civilized" society, which assumes women want to be
concerned with appearance, and, ultimately, pleasing others. So we are
continually fed with the "glamor" magazines and the weight-loss plans,
and TV shows like "The Swan", "Bachelorette", "Who Wants to Marry
a Millionaire" (I don't know if these are exactly the right names, as I
haven't watched a single episode of any of them), etc., etc. The
attempt is to make us feel inadequate and the need to pit ourselves
against each other for the "prize" of the "handsome" and wealthy male.
Is this different from the caveman days?? Our culture sees to it that
women are not given much encouragement in breaking away from what has
been expected of them for thousands of years. We are still expected to
cook, clean, take care of the children, look good, and listen to
"music" with little more than a beat and some ridiculous, shallow
lyrics. And who says you can't dance to prog? I do it all the time.
Men, on the other hand, are for the most part encouraged from the start
to be independent, have their own minds, blaze their own trails, be
experimental, go deeper (no jokes, please ), be less concerned with their appearance so that they can turn their attention elsewhere (girls, can you imagine
that?? ) - and I think appreciating prog music requires those
characteristics. I think women are made to believe that those
characteristics are undesireable, and isn't life all about being
desireable??
The last six words of the above question would be sarcasm, by the way.
It's all too bad, really. Luckily, I have managed to steer away from
the norm in this regard. Not only do I listen to prog, but my house is
a mess and I only know one way to cook chicken.
And I look good without makeup, as all human beings do.

Sadly, yes. Prog is predominantly a male thing.
Some women do like it, but not enough get involved with making it.
I agree with those who say that women do seem to like music they can dance to, or love songs. Genesis also said there was no significant female turnout at their shows until they had a hit with the dire 'Follow you follow me'
Besides there seems to more male nerds than female nerds.

Women will put up with prog only until prognant, or (gasp!) married....
after that, it's back to Madonna, Celine, and ABBA!

Sonja Kristina of Curved Air and Annie Haslam of Renaissance must be considered as members of prog-bands but both of them are singers. Is it so that if a woman is a member of a band, you can be sure she is the singer?
That question applies on most rock-music, sadly.
By the way, MY FIRST POST!!
