Topic: A few humble requests Posted: April 20 2006 at 23:02 |
First: a band's albums should be able to go into more than one category. I don't know how much work it would involve, but I think it would definately be worth it. For example, I think the term Rock in Opposition describes Frank Zappa very well; however, Hot Rats through The Grand Wazoo are most definately Jazz-Rock, and they belong in that category. Just as it would be a crime not to have PATGOD under Psych-Rock, it is still more a crime to classify Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut as Space Rock.
Now for things that are probably never going to happen: 1) No more emoticons! Some people overuse them way too much, and there's not much that's more annoying than somebody responding to a post with just an emoticon. This is a forum, convey your thoughts into words! Now I understand that sometimes they are needed to make sure your words are taken in the proper tone, but text emoticons are just fine, and people aren't going to use 20 text emoticons in a post, but I have seen people use that many graphic emoticons in a single post.
2) No more large fonts! Sometimes it is useful, but too often people abuse it, such as by shouting somebody down, or blowing up an emoticon until it is huge, pixelated, and ugly. (and sometimes this is the entire post.) What's more annoying though are people who write every post like this, so they stand out more. It's extremely annoying and hard to read, especially if the post is more than a line or two. (and writing more than a sentence should most definately be encouraged) Be unique by the way and the quality of your writing; don't rely on writing your whole damn post in a huge font, italics, or an obscene color like lime green. Because sure, then people will remember you, as the annoying idiot whose posts were damn near impossible to read because he or she just has to be unique and obviously different from everybody else.

Some well considered thoughts there Ghandi.
I would say though that emoticons are an essential feature of a forum. All emotion is lost in plain text, a well placed emoticon can convey instantly what could not be said in 100 words.

Yes, and I like colours and different font sizes too!
Long live creativity/individuality!

Ah, but that can be accomplished just as easily with ";-)" or ":-)", and people are far less likely to abuse that than " " or " ". Why? I honestly have no idea, but I frequent other forums which do not have graphic emoticons, and overall, people use them far less. Which I think is better for the forum, because people are putting their thoughts into words, but a text emoticon can still ensure that whatever is written is taken in the proper context. Whatever though, I don't honestly expect that to happen unless we run into some rampant abuse.

^ Ah, but I'm fairly new to this cyber realm, I don't know how to do those text emoticons, I don't understand them all (their meanings are not nearly as intuitive to those new to them -- and many are oriented sideways), and I type so slowly that using them would mean extra time wasted for me.
When there is no tone of voice, no inflection, no facial expressions, no body language (all vital aspects of non-textual communication), the emoticon can be very useful in helping to achieve understanding. This is why they exist in the first place.
Though I understand and even sympathize with many of your points, you would effectively "punish" all for the "sins" of a few. That is just not fair.
Finally, Ghandi 2, you have been here for what -- two months? Is it not a little presumptuous of you to be pushing for such major changes, after so little time here
PS: Colour is nice -- it brightens my world, and is one more "tool" or palate available to me in this medium to broaden/enhance my creative scope.

Well the most important ones are intuitive. Failing that, one can always use the *action* things, such as *is embarrased*
I said that I have nothing against color; people here don't abuse it, and that's good.
Time doesn't matter; I have seen enough in the time that I have been here, and I also have been on other forums for longer. And like I said earlier, I honestly have no hope at all that any of that (besides multiple-genre bands) would actually happen.
Well I find graphic emoticons somewhat annoying in any context, but I have never seen the large fonts used in a way that wasn't extremely annoying. Maybe I'm wrong, but the only reasons I can see for using the large font is so you always type in large letters, thus making yourself more "unique"; or to make somethin larger so you can shout easier. For example, the Unsupported Absolute Statements thread is for the most part quite funny, but it is also almost impossible to read since everyone is writing like this!!!!!

Well, that sideways smile thing, as seen in Internet backgammon, took me some time to figure out, believe it or not, and I honestly do not know what those asterisks* you posted above are supposed to mean.
I said that I have nothing against color; people here don't abuse it, and that's good.
Yet why the lime-green complaint, below? V

Okay, I'll grant the other forums experience, and I guess someone new to a site, with no official status, is free to ask for major changes they don't expect to get. (Still, I think I'd build up more of a "presence" before asking for big changes, or voicing complaints re common practices -- but that's just me.)
Well I find graphic emoticons somewhat annoying in any context, but I have never seen the large fonts used in a way that wasn't extremely annoying.
I hope that my bolding your words like that ^ does not enrage you!
I can use an even smaller font too, if you wish....
Maybe I'm wrong, but the only reasons I can see for using the large font is so you always type in large letters, thus making yourself more "unique"; or to make somethin larger so you can shout easier. I feel your pain -- just imagine how funny it would be if you could read it!
Seriously though, Christ, er Ghandi, why do you put yourself through the traumatic ordeal of struggling to read things that are "almost impossible to read?" Why, if you don't stop it, you could go blind!!!
(Are you afraid you'll miss something important? Believe me, you won't! )
Hmmm... you're not by chance a myopic, grumpy old spy sent by Big Brother Bush to keep an eye on the leftie, loony progholes, are you?
