Well, this just flashed through my mind:
How much amazing art is there in this genre? I've stumbled upon Mattias Norén's website a couple of weeks ago, and he made the cover for the Evergrey album and the for the inlay for Star One & Ayreon's cd's. His site is to be found here:

Sorry for the large pics, but this is in my opinion the only way to see what the art is all about.

Which covers do you like most? It's fun (at least I think it's fun) to look who's done the art of which album, and see what that artist has done more....

Well, we're pretty 'artsy' people if I must believe the general public, so this topic can not be anything but an absolute success.

I like painted covers, no photographs. Examples:

Don't apologize for the large pictures, the artwork is one of the reasons I miss LP's.

There was a post on this topic a couple of months ago and there is a wealth of amazing artwork for progressive rock out there.

Amazing. Just listen to the music and look at the art.

Ok, the music is brilliant.. But covers like those. What's so special about that? I'm sure they had pencils 'back in the days' and people who could handle them right...?

Maybe there's a really interesting story behind covers like these, but I don't get it.

i dont know the story

this is my logic

okay 'Close To the Edge',

the title track is vast subject to any artist, to paint particular scenario,

what we have here, is plain green gradation, bottam is green then towards the top it merged into black, like "close to the edge" it is simple,

like a cut section of a river

and that track is very very GREEN

2112

remember the "Overture"

thats it

Ah, GYBE!
Have to get into that band one of these days. Heard something by them a couple of months ago, and it didn't really thrill me or something...
Nice cover, I have to admit that!

Yes, this one's a classic. I actually bought a poster of this picture 2 months ago. It's the same size as the picture on this link. Pretty awesome for my new place in a couple of months!

Rock Art - a subject almost as close to my heart as the music itself!  I collect rock art, with a focus on the '60s San Francisco artists - in particular the late Rick Griffin, considered by many to be the finest rock artist of our time.  Rick's Grateful Dead "Aoxomoxoa" cover is a great example of his late '60s psychedelic period...

For more on Griffin, check out:

http://www.myraltis.co.uk/rickgriffin/

Other great artists to come out of this scene were Wes Wilson, Alton Kelly, Stanley Mouse, Victor Moscoso, Bill Ogden & Wilfred Satty.  Roger Dean is an obvious favorite around here, as well as Storm Thorgerson...wonderful artists!

As for modern prog covers, I like the work of Thomas Ewerhard (Spock's Beard) & Lasse Hoile (Porcupine Tree)

I enjoy designing covers for my home studio projects...
