I intend putting a poll in a number of websites, to get a concensus to the best jazz rock albums recorded since 1990. And I do strictly mean jazz rock (i.e. rock hybridised with jazz or vice versa - although during the 90’s it expanded to include nu.jazz or nu.fusion which is jazz mixed with rap, hip hop, trip hop, trance, or drum’n’bass etc), rather the broader ranging term jazz fusion (which strictly means jazz fused with many sorts of music, e.g. European folk (e.g. Jan Garbarek), Indian (e.g. Shakti Revisited), Arabic, Flamenco, Latin, etc.,  as well as rock).

However, instead of doing what so many others do, providing a slanted and far from complete list of albums for the poll, I am looking for recommendations. To make the collation manageable to have a poll with 20 albums based on a concensus, please list (preferably in the correct order) your top 5 (max) jazz rock albums recorded from 1990.

Some suggestions, starting with some favourites:

Conrad Schrenk’s Extravaganza: Save The Robots

Jonas Hellborg, Buckethead, Michael Shrieve: Octave Of The Holy Innocent

Jonas Hellborg Trio: e

Hellborg Lane & Sipe: Time Is The Enemy

LennyWhite: Edge

John McLaughlin: The Promise (not totally jazz rock but the majority tracks fall into this heading)

Allan Holdsworth: All Night Wrong

Soft Works: Abracadabra

Bugge Wesseltoft New Conception Of Jazz: Live

Jens Johansson: Fission

McHacek: Featuring Ourselves

Whoopgnash

Mastermind: Excelsior!

Wayne Krantz: Two Drink Minimum

Screaming Headless Torsos:Live

David Fiuczinski: Jazz Punk

Gongzilla: Thrive

Tunnels: Progressivity

(Most of these musicians have released other albums in the last 15 years)

Others:

Vertu

CAB

Electrocution 250

Alessandro Benvenuti

Fire Merchants

Medeski Martin & Wood

Spaced Out

Joe Zawinul

Pat Metheny

Nguyen Le

Nu.fusion/nu.jazz: Boomish, Nils Petter Molvaer

Obviously not exhaustive, but the musicians who immediately come to mind at the moment

Sean Malone's Cortlandt has some tunes which may apply.

Sphere3 - Comeuppance http://www.elrose.demon.co.uk/CD_Reviews/body_sphere3_cds.ht ml

Birdsongs of the Mesozoic - The Iridium Controversy, has some very Jazz/Rock/Prog music.

One song "Hindby" from Karmakanic "Wheel of Life" would turn a few heads.

"Driller" from Mongol, MP3 on site, would be a welcome inclusion.

Have you heard "One Way or the Other" from Derek Sherinian's New album Mythology with Holdsworth and Jerry Goodman?

Niacin

Try out "Spotty Herbert" from Carl Verheyen's CD Slang Justice. Coming Soon!

That's all for now.

I'm a big fan of Medeski, Martin and Wood, I think they make some interesting music. I highly recommend there most recent release, Uninvisible, great stuff.

Niacin

I missed a raft of excellent albums from Toner Center Records and how could I forget Niacin (btw the new John Novello solo Threshold is really good - check out Novello's website for more info)

Hidden agenda here is to provide a list of good recommendation of more recent jazz rock. The managing editor of the UK magazine Jazzwise, Jon Newey, had a private commission from MOJO magazine to write an article on collectible jazz rock records and provide an essential top ten list  - he asked my opinion on this  and the only thing we disagreed on was the inclusion of a Holdsworth album, and what album(s) should represent the 90's - he got his way with a Tribal Tech.  Now I just realised I've omitted Tribal Tech  - Rocket Science  is really good.

The Conrad Schrenk Save the Robots album released in 1996 on a small Austrian label PAO Records, has attracted a disproportional amount of positive praise from the handful of people who have been able to nail a copy - many of these are saying it's the best jazz rock album in a decade. I know Danbo has recently got a copy so I'm curious to know his reaction on first hearing the disc?

Conrad Schrenk: Save the Robots reminds me of Mark Gleed's SOMA project in many respects, however, I'm a bit more immersed in other delights at the moment and must slake my thirst before beginning another quaff.

I don't know much about jazzrock, but the album NAKED CITY by JOHN ZORN (I believe it was from 1990) kicked serious butt. I think that is jazzmetal, actually. One of my all-time favourite albums!
