Topic: Scenes from a Memory and 6DoIT disc 2 Posted: April 16 2006 at 20:03 |
The question was asked in another thread ... I think that those two discs are very similar in style, sound and songwriting.

Fair enough ... but I think that The Test that Stumped them All is pretty heavy. At least it recycles quite a few Metallica riffs.![](smileys/smiley1.gif)

I don't think they are noticeably similar. They share some similarities, yes, but none too blatent or distasteful.

What's "blatant" and "distasteful" got to do with "similar"?

Mostly, no. Apart from "The Dance of Eternity" and "The War Inside My Head" being a bit similar and "Overture/Strange Deja Vu" capturing the feel of 6DoIT as a whole, almost nothing is similar enough.

If you look at the entire DT discography ... I simply can't understand how these two discs are not similar. Of course 6DOIT disc 2 is more symphonic, especially the overture. But the key sections of the 6 "degrees" are really much like the main themes from Scenes in structure and composition.
What if I put my question this way: "Which other DT album is most similar to Scenes From a Memory?"

I totally disagree with anyone who voted 'similar'. Too me Metropolis
pt2 is real disaster and 6 Degres is almost a masterpiece! For the
similarities now; The riffs (all differents), the progression trough
the songs is totally different even the way the album sounds (the
mixing and everything) that is different! I hate Metropolis pt2 and 6
Degrees could easely be my second DT fav album, right after "Images
& Words".

![](smileys/smiley36.gif) I'm almost the complete opposite of you, except I don't hate 6DOIT, it's just one of my least favourite DT albums.
I personally don't see too many similarities... Mike, what specifically are you referring to?

It's too difficult to put to words ... but I stand by my vote. I can't understand how anyone could not group these two discs together when looking at similarities in the Dream Theater discography.

Well, I probably chose the wrong words for the topic. The similarities aren't blatant in that you would not listen to Six Degrees and think to yourself "this sounds very much like Scenes" or vice versa. And I was kind of expanding on the thought by saying, though there might be some similarities between the two it's not done in such a way that makes it stale or less interesting because it's repeating the same formulas.
So I suppose "blatant" was the right word, but "distasteful" was not.

Listening to 6DOIT disc 2 reminds me of Scenes quite often. Not in the overture, but - like I said above - the key sections, how the sections are connected, how dynamics are implemented ... all very different from any other DT album except for those two.

These two albums are quite similar
At first, I wanted to vote 'not similar', but after I read the topic, and the explanation:

is more symphonic, especially the overture. But the key sections of

Yes, they are the 2 albums within the DT discography which bear the most resemblance (this isn't a correct sentence... is it? ).
|
Focus on the music... Focus!

For one, Mike, 6DoIT is so vastly more orchestrated and lush than SFAM, that it almost feels more like a Symphonic Prog album than a Prog Metal album. I can't say that for SFAM.
