Re its music -- and art in general -- I find the renaissance era much more accessible, complex, and interesting. (Though medieval music and art is not without its considerable charms.)
Much renaissance music could certainly be of interest to prog and folk fans!
Check out the Toronto Consort (they do both eras, but specialize in the renaissance):

I can't always distinguesh the two from each other, so if anyone can explain the real differences (I always assume Renaissance is more clasical (piano/harpsichord/violin) styled and medieval more acoustic guitar folkish, with horns, and troubadourish)

Medieval is the most interesting period, they call it the dark ages because there was little written at the time, though i started to learn Middle English some time ago, it has a charm all of its own, there is plenty of writing if you look for it, such as "Canterbury Tales" and many good examples of written verse, and the music is amazing - anyone heard a good lute lately? Also the architecture was more interesting then, the peasants were dirtier and more disgusting (some got turned into a newt), they had knights in armour who jousted, more intricate methods of torture then, better castles, witch burning, i would have loved to live then! The question is what years did the medieval period cover - i guess 1100 to 1500? also they knew how to eat then - hogshead, roasted pig, a firkin of ale, gallons of wine!!
a medieval party - those were the days!
they knew how to fight, too, more deadly weapons, bigger swords - just look at that bloke slicing a Knight's head in half - helmet and all!

the Medieavel period is generally agreed to have started at the fall of the Roman Empire which would make it about 500 to 1500

It would have really sucked to live in the middle ages, but from an historical perspective, it is far more interesting IMO. I like some art, but if art, particullarly Renaissance art, is not real high on your favourites list, the Renaissance can be a bit boring.

Depends on your status and whereabouts in the world you lived. The Islamic world was far more advanced than Christendom, for example.
