Topic: are air prog? Posted: November 06 2004 at 09:38 |
having spent the last while with air's albums on
heavy rotation, I came to wondering if the 70s
inspired electro noodlings of the french duo could
classify as prog?
They'd probably hate the association but there are
huge echoes of Floyd, ELO and a bunch of other 70s
types in there, particularly on the Virgin Suicides OST
and on 10,000Hz Legend. And if anyone has seen
them live their wig-out sections on a variety of tunes
definitely conjure up some space rock moments.
Any thoughts on the ever so tasteful gallic pairing?

All I know from them is "Sexy Boy" which I rather liked. They do have a nice, muffled, low-fi retro feel to them. I'll have to check out some more stuff- any specific suggestions?

Space - Pop is think describes Air better. I adore their all albums although ive not heard the Virgin Suicides soundtrack. But my favourite is 10,000Hz legend its much more experimental and interesting but they went back to their old simple ambient selves in the Talkie Walkie album.
I saw them live this year too! and they do a lot more 'Noodling' as you put it, they played a lot of stuff from the recent album it was an amazing show but everyone really only perked up when they played tracks from Moon Safari which made me feel kind of sad for some reason...

james,
the albums to go for are The Virgin Suicides and, as
Petra says, 10,000hz Legend.
The latter is their most experimental and features a
guest appearance from the wonderful Beck (whose
last album Sea Change should be on everyone's
list). It's weird, wonderful, in places utterly mad
('Wonder Milky Bitch') but is an album that just
improves with each listen. There's always more to
find in it.
Virgin Suicides is a straighter record but has lots of
Floydian moments. Highly recommended.
Personally, while I loved Moon Safari on its release, I
find it a little trite now, though there are still moments
of magic.
One to avoid is the Everybody Hertz album of remixes
done by DJs, it's crap.
Like Petra, I find their latest Talkie Walkie too much
of a return to the ways of their debut.
I read in an interview that they felt they had gone of
the rails with 10,000hz legend. I wish they'd ride that
train one more time.
They're worth checking out if you want some
ambienty, Floyd meets Jarre meets ELO with a
finely-honed pop sensibility.
And again Petra is right, they're probably too pop for
prog, but I dig em.

James: Sexy Boy comes from Moon Safari, so you may want to go for that one.
I haven't heard anything of theirs besides Moon Safari (which I like), but I wouldn't go so far as to consider them prog.

I think they clearly take inspiration from prog, but I dont think they can really be classified as such.
I could never get on with 10,000hz legend. I liked Moon Safari, and 'Premiere Symptomes' The latest has been growing on me slowly.

AIR is a great band, and the ambient sounds along with the textures are amazing. Moon safari is one of the best albums in the net nowadays, but they don't fit in here as any form of prog... If they fit, why BRIAN ENO IS NOT IN HERE??????? I consider him as a great prog master, however, like Bowie, he touches and embraces another realms to tightly.
