I'm just curious as to how others sort their collections.  Generally there would be a primary and secondary scheme (for example: primarily sorted alphabetically by artist and secondarily sorted chronologically by title).  In this poll please put your primary scheme and include extra information as comments.

Iv'e sort of got a pile of cd's in the corner of my room. The most favoured albums are therefore on the top and vice verse...Lars Ulrich hasn't seen the light of day for over a year or so if you know what I mean.

Pretty random, but CD's for each artist are placed chronologically.

Kind of anal about it but I sort them first alphabetically by artist and then by the year released for each artist.

Uhhhhh they're in boxes, no room to store them otherwise, and obviously in no order whatsoever!

1st by genre, prog is first then other rock/ stuff I was into right before I got into prog, then stuff I'm embarrased to own.
2nd after genres are separated I alphabatize by artists, but keep solo artists with  bands they used to be with (Peter Gabriel w/Genesis, etc)
3rd If I have more than one album by a band I have the albums chronologicalized

I'm with Rushaholic and Valarius (Alpha then by order of release). Otherwise, I'd have no idea where to find anything.

The LP collection is sorted geographically by country and then by how much I like them. For example:

King Crimson (sorted by release date) is followed by solo albums from Fripp, Sinfield, McDonald & Giles, Bruford etc. Which would then be followed by Yes followed by solo albums from Squire, Anderson, Banks etc. Flash would follow Yes as I've always veiwed Flash as an off shoot of Yes. Followed by Genesis blah blah blah, you get the idea.

The CD collection is sorted alphabetically. That is so much easier.

dead things don't talk too well, they've got a shaky sense of diction.

Wherever I put them in the shelf, so the ones I listen to recently usually end up at one end

Same for me too. I always have alittle of both styles, a little order mixed with a little randomness. After all, variety is the spice of life.

I use both alphabetically and chronologically.  My CD case goes ABC, but, if I have more than one CD by a given artist, I put the CD's by date of release.

I have  Prog and Non-prog towers of Cd's. Then I sort them by chronological release. My favorite bands are first (Crimson, Yes, Genesis, etc.) then the rest. But I've really given up trying to sort them because when I buy new ones the order gets screwed and I'm just too lazy to resort them so eventually the new ones and favorites are on top.

Albums separated from cds. Genres first (at least 15). alphabetical order by artist, then chronologically by artist.
