Man, they rule!
It is probably the most semi-classical prog band ever! If you look back what they've accomplished, you do not have the choice to be impressed! It is one of my favorite prog band! Nevertheless, few people talk about them. How can they be so underrated?
I would like to write here their name with their usual font style, but that's all I can do:
RENAISSANCE

I've always wanted to invest in more Renaissance. I can't seem to find them other than the 2 I already own at the record stores(Tales of a Thousand Nights pt1 and 2). I like them but I cannot say I love them. But then again I own their greatest hits products and should give their regular LPS a try. I will, but I will have to probably purchase them over the internet.
Annie Haslim definately has one of the best voices in prog.

Acting very strange is a bad Mike Rutherford album, and to be honest I was just listening to it!!![](smileys/smiley36.gif)

I also love Renaissance. They are not usually placed in the top classic prog bands with Yes, Emerson, Crimson, etc, but they usually come next with the likes of Camel or Gentle Giant. Personally, I would include it among the best and more influential. I understand bands like Camel or Oldfield (my two favourite) are usually left out of the top classic bands, because they came a bit late. But Renaissance started at the beginning of the movement.
I tend to think that this group is victim of its non-popular style: being too sweet for most of the tastes, specially in this forum.

Great band, but A Song For All Seasons was the last interesting studio album.

I'd like to know more about this band. I have one album by them called 'The other woman' (1986) I think its terrible to be honset, but I have a feeling it may not be anything like their earlier work. It features singer Betty Thatcher (no relation to the facist dictator) and not Annie Haslan (??) I bought it on the strength of 'Northern lights' which is a lovely song.
The album is a collection of dreadful, self indulgent love songs which all sound exactly the same and are in no way progressive IMO.
Can anyone reccomend a good solid album by this band??

Love Renaissance.. saw them live many times (the John Tout line-up anyway). Their live album "Live at Carnegie Hall" was a great live album... and my favorite album by them is "Ashes are Burning"... I love the song "Can You Understand".

Wha? Renaissance?
Never heard of them up until this point. I shall now investigate.
I'm assuming that they are no-longer a going concern?

Rennaissance were a tremendously talented band with the supreme vocal talents of Annie Haslam.Their early music was easily their best from Prologue to Turn of the Cards' which, for me was their best, although, Ashes and Scherrazadde were both musically brilliant.recently 'Tuscany' had it's moments but they will be played many times on my pc and from my discs.Major regret is that I never saw them I cannot remember if they toured here in the U.K.

Once I dreamed I was wearing the Scheherazade '75 Tour T-shirt, featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra!

Great band, they had their own folky/Celtic style, but simply amazing, probably the most symphonic band in all the sense of the word.
And Annie Haslam is from another planet, she's incredible.

In the 90s, Michael Dunford, who was Renaissance Mark II (a long story that one) main composer, released this album and some compilations of earlier hits as 'Michael Dunford's Renaissance', but this is not technicaly the same band. Besides that, he continued the pop trend the group started with 'Camera, camera', so it's not interesting for prog heads.
My recomendation is you start with the same record I did, 'Scheherezade and other stories'. You can also try 'Turn of the Cards'.

Don't overlook the first two (original line-up.See archive.) albums ,Prologue and Renaissance. The Illusion album is also well worth checking out
