I will have to say that Mendez and Lopez work better with the band as a
whole. Nordin's drumming on Orchid and Morningrise did not have the
variety that Lopez offers and DeFarfalla, whom I owe much respect to,
over powers Nordin in many cases. I enjoy Lopez and Mendez mainly
because of Lopez, but they both form a much more cohesive unit inside
of Opeth.
NOW what would be interesting is to see Lopez and DeFarfalla together. Quite technical indeed.

I don't own enough of their catalog to make an informed opinion on this. Great band, though.

Lopez and Mendez. They form a very tight rhythm section. Mendez is no bass virtuoso, but I think he has a great playing style that fits perfectly with Opeth's music. I just love his bass lines, especially on Ghost Reveries. Lopez really goes without saying; he is fabulous.

I went with Nordin and DeFarfalla, but I much prefer Martin Lopez as a drummer. Martin Mendez is a good bass player, but he doesn't seem to have the creativity, melody, or variation that DeFarfalla had in his. Some of the bass playing on Morningrise is just amazing. It's a shame that kind of playing isn't part of Opeth anymore.
I still do prefer Mendez as a drummer, but I feel a great bass player can make a band much more interesting to listen to than a great drummer. Great drummers certainly add a lot to the band, but so many drummers are so good it's truly interesting to listen to a band with a great bassist.

I just saw Opeth last week. Lopez wasn't with them. Martin Axenrot from Bloodbath was filling in.
I hope Lopez is okay, his style fits Opeth.

Yes, he has some blood disease and before he was having panic attacks.
I hope this does not jeopardize his drumming as a whole. I can wait a
couple of tours without him, but if he has to leave Opeth, that would
be excruciating.
