Topic: Obscure Prog Bands? Posted: October 17 2004 at 16:22 |
I'm looking to get into some more obscure prog bands, I like anything from Radiohead, To Dream Theater, To Tool...The only thing I don't really like are Growling vocals (opeth), or really high pitched voices (Rush, though I do like some of there music) Also could you please say what kind of music they are and if there is a good place (A site or something) To download there music.
I heard something about Pineapple Thief?

This is the best site to download full tracks from. You wont get full albums of stuff (that is very disrespectful to the artists and is illegal) but you get an incredibly broad taster of all sub-genres of Progressive Rock.
Might I suggest trying Echolyn or Symphony X?

Judging from what you've listed I am guessing you like modern prog
Try Oztric Tentacles or Godspeed you Black Emperor...that is..as long as you don't mind music without vocals

If you like Radiohead and Porcupine Tree, you'll like Pineapple Thief.
If you're into Dream Theater, check out Ayreon, namely their new album The Human Equation.

Now we're talkin'
Echolyn is my fav of the "new" prog movement.
If you like VDGG, check out Discipline, Matthew Parmenter or Parallel or 90 Degrees.
Pick Floyd? Timothy Pure, RPWL, Singularity' "Between Sunlight and Shadow."
The Everything Mix? IZZ and Syzygy.

NeBeLNeST from France!! They're so great!! - a mixture of King Crimson and Ozric tentacles with touches of Gong
Also Echolyn (GG/Genesis/Kansas/CSNY) and Enchant (a hybrid of Rush, DT and Marillion) from the USA, Daghmar (VdGG/Rush/Marillion) from Canada, White Willow (69-70 KC with a Nordic somber niche) from Norway, Pain of Salvation (a peculiar prog metal style) from Sweden, High Wheel (ELP/Yes/Eloy/Deep Purple) from Germany, and IQ (the master veterans and most talented survivors of British 80s neoprog wave) from GB.

Obscure 70's prog...try England
A Strange band that released a debut album right at the peak of punk and sank without trace. A mixture of Genesis/Yes/Crimson.

Hiya Tree. If you like Tool, check out the Mars Volta's Alone In The Comatarium album, which isn't as dark and is slightly jazzier. Still rocks though. If Geddy Lee's voice isn't to your taste, you might not go for Mars, however.
The best mainstream prog CD in recent years was the first Transatlantic album, SMPTE. Not as widdly as Dream Theater and more in common with classic UK stuff like Yes, with loads of harmony vocals. For totally out-there contemprary albums, try Japanese collective Acid Mothers Temple, who have a kind of psychedelic krautrock thing going on.

Oooh, just found this....
You wanted obscure..This is a French Progger from the 70's (I think Vangellis had a hand in the writing). Great album title too

If you can find these bands from the seventies, go for them. They are occasionally released on CD or go to used music store and do some hunting.
PELL MELL- Germany
OCTOPUS- Germany
FRUUPP- Ireland ( often was the opening act for Genesis)
P.MOBIL- Hungary
RUPHUS- Norway
MIDNIGHT SUN- Denmark (some great Roger Dean artwork!)
Olympic- Czeckoslovakia
Omega- Hungary (biggest Hungarian band ever! see my reviews)
GATE- Germany
I could go on and on
