Over the last 6 - 8 weeks an album I have been playing almost every day is 'Fish's 'Raingods with Zippos'.It's not new I have had it for nigh on 5 years since it's release in 1999.For many Fish fans 'A vigil in a wilderness of mirrors' is their fave from this mightly gifted fellow Scotsman, but after playing it for a short while on it's release I turned to other things. Quite why now begins to make scratch my head rather viciously for this is  a truly brilliant work from a man whose works I have always admired. The album begins with the tinkling gentle piano sounds of 'Tumbledown before exploding into raucous thumping guitar. The tracks include 'Mission Statement and two soothing lovely ballads 'Incomplete' and the harrowing 'Tilted Cross' a song about land mines whose gentle beauty defies the song's content.Thereafter it is the fantastic piece of music 'A plague of ghosts which starts with the equisite 'Old Haunts' before the rythm and mood changes with 'Digging Deep' to the beautiful 'Waving at stars' and the suite ends with the remarkable  'Rain Gods Dancing' throughout Fish is ablely assisted by one Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree playing blistering guitars and other very fine musicians. For me Fish has so much to offer the prog music scene/ rock scene I believe he is so pissed off with the music industry as a whole that he has threatened to quit touring.Lest I forget there is also a great version of Alex Harvey's 'Faith Healer'.Wordsmith/Vocalist' don't give up' as the Arch Angel said.

I'm a Scot...Fish is a Fellow Scot WoW!!!! this guy is amazing truly a genius..i read this post on Friday ..waited to see who replied but it was read with no replies. Fish from Marillion is a prog man and his solo stuff is great and no one can reply! well i'm relpying, i've heard Fish solo albums from Visual to Sunsets on Empire and Raingods and a disappointing Felini Days to Field Of Crows his latest. This man is  a great lyricist..vocalist and im astounded no one has replied to this post. You read but don't reply. even if you don't like it you can at-least voice an opinion on a major talent who should not be lost on the music scene...it saddens me to hear he might be chucking the music scene..then again when i seen this response on the thread it might well explain it. Fish for me is a mighty fine musician, i will be listening to Fish because for me the man is absolutely fantastic. Are there Fish people on this site?

I am sorry Shrinking Violet, but, while I read it and found it interesting, I didn't have any input because I simply haven't heard it yet. I place it on my things to check out list. I loved the material of Fish's on Marillion but the one LP I heard in his solo career(Internal Exile) seemed weak or just not my cup of tea. I thought the songs were a little too happy and the music accompanying it lacked the bite his material with Marillion had. I do plan on giving the guy another listen, however in the future.

Cheers

P.S...I love your passion for Fish

I have loved Fish and his lyrics since I discovered him on SFAJT.  While I find his solo work spotty (I didn't like "Suits" for instance), some of his work is outstanding.  I especially loved "Sunsets on Empire", from the intro guitar work of "Johnny Punter", to the impassioned lyrics of the title track.  I can't say that I cared for RWZ, but I'll have to go back and listen to it again.

BTW: If anyone has a tab for the guitar of "Johnny Punter", I would truly love to learn that song.

The problem with a lot of lead singers when they go solo, or make solo albums, is that their output is dominated even more by vocals. Because they will often not have the ability to play a musical instrument, they feel their voice has to be constantly heard, for it to be their album.

In a band situation, the rest of the group will have their influence, and hopefully this leads to a balanced album with sometimes lengthy instrumental sections.

Other band members such as guitarists, bassists, drummers etc. do not seem to have this attitude to their solo work to nearly the same degree, probably becuase most of them try to sing!Confused

I think Fish's early solo output suffered in this way. With "Raingods with zippos" though, Fish seemed to be prepared to make much more of a band album, and the result was probably his most progressive album yet. (Hey I must save that for my review!LOLWink)

I agree Fragile, RWZ is a very good album probably Fish's best since his days with you know who.

Good to see SV likes it too!Big smile

I am guilty of not haing taken an interest in Fish's solo career. To be honest as much as I liked Marillion in their Fishy days, I stopped listerning when he left and lost interest in their music for quite a while. Only in the last year have I dug out all my old Marillion vinyl, played it, replaced it with CD's and even invested in some Hogarth Marillion, which I'm not that blown away by to be honest.

I clearly need an education, so I'll read some reviews, and make a purchase very soon. Recommendations please!!??

Hey SV no need to go railing at people but you are young so it's understandable.GDUB like all artists Fish has made some very average albums the one you mentioned and Fellini Days come to mind. But Vigil as Reed Lover so clearly pointed out for Blacksword  is a superb album from start to finish.Sometimes music grabs you and holds you no matter what age you are.For me currently it's RGWZ it really is just a fantastic album.Field of crows is also very good but not as strong as the two highlighted.Bob thanks for your input it's appreciated I only hope that the Fish man  checks out forums such as these. He is a highly talented individual who should forget the acting thing and stick to what he is best suited to, making music.Raingods is a very fine prog album buy it and find out.SV tnx for getting these good ol prog boys moving.

hey velvet , yur pure dead brilliant at that so yu ur ..LoL!

Seriously, Fish is contemplating leaving the music buisness altogether. I'm no sure if it's a mixture of bad luck or what but somethings making the big man thinking about packing it all in, this saddens me imensely as i have never seen him and some how managed to miss him on tour this year. A talent like Fish should not be quitting the prog scene.

    awwwwwwwwright..!!!
