Topic: prog artists who use fretless bass Posted: October 09 2004 at 20:18 |
I don't know if you are like me: I absolutely love any well played electric fretless bass. I prefer fretless bass to standard one.
Do you know prog artists who use it, and on which albums?
Here some that come to mind:
camel-nude; eloy-planets; rick wakeman-rhapsodies; Iq-ever + subterranea; kate bush-sensual world; pendragon-jewel; david gilmour-about face; shadowland-mad as a hatter...

I love fretless bass. I own an alembic series 2.
Jon Myung uses one on a couple of DT songs i think.
Also, check out some fretless primus.

One of the obvious players of fretless bass has to be Percy Jones of Brand X. His style sounded great within that environment but it dosen't suit some of the sessions that he did e.g. Eno's Before and After Science.Sometimes it worked others...

Mick Karn is the slinkiest fretless player on the prog/art rock front. Check out Polytown, where Karn's fretless handles the melody line and David Torn rips over the top. Karn was in the 80's band Japan and a one off reunion called Rain Tree Crow.
Also...
Eric Sands of the band MAN ON FIRE plays some great fretless. What is normally a guitar fill is played with slippery fretless. If you like heavier RUSH influenced tunes, check out MAN ON FIRE. It stayed in my CD player for quite a long time.

Well, I listen Animals and I did not noticed fretless bass; where , precisely?
On the other hand, there is fretless bass on the wall (hey you)
Oh, I forgot: another great fretless album: Mark Isham's Castalia, although it is not prog! Patrick O'hearn is the bassist! Awesome!

Somebody told me or I read somewhere, that Jaco Pastorius
had a large hand in the development of the fretless electric bass
- and more than defining the sound and technique. Apparently, as part
of an experiment, he took a pair of pliers and levered out the
all the frets from a fretted 4 string, then filled in the
resulting holes with epoxy putty, sanded the filler off and was in
business. Therefore it depends if you count Weather Report
as prog - I do as the jazz end of the scale -but to start at the
very beginning............ You've already had suggested one of Wales'
great exports in the form of Percy Jones. Not only his Brand X recordings are recommended (Livestock is agood point to start) but, his solo work which takes on allsort of musical forms, and most recently he is leader of Tunnels, e.g Progressivity (on Jones' label Buckyball Records).

I can't find it now, but there is an interview with David G. out there where he says he used some fretless bass on the Animals album. However, I did find this one about "Hey You"
Rock Compact Disc magazine, Issue 3, September 1992
Interviewed David Gilmour- DG
CD: Was Roger an effective bassist back then?
DG: He had developed his own limited, or very simple style. He was never very keen on improving himself as a bass player and half the time I would play bass on the records because I would tend to do it quicker. Right back to those early records; I mean, at least half the bass on all recorded output is me anyway.
CD: This is not a widely acknowledged fact.
DG: Well, I think it's been said, but it's certainly not something we go around advertising. Rog used to come in and say, "Thank you very much" to me once in a while for winning him bass- playing polls.
CD: Did you play the fretless bass on "Hey You"?
DG: Yeah. Hmm. Roger playing fretless bass? Please! (laughs)

Camelīs bassist (i forgot his name) on "Pressure Point" makes a show apart with his fretless.
Michael Manring is not exactly progressive, but makes small miracles with a fretless.
