Which member (ex or current) of a prog band you think had the best solo career, in terms of overall quality and "personality" of the music?

I would not consider sellings or quantity of releases as
the most important parameters, otherwise Phil Collins would win in the first case, as probably Rick Wakeman or Klaus Schulze would in the second case...

Many will agree about Phil's career... The only complain about much of his music is that he used so much of those electronic and synthesized drums, probably the sounds that I hate the most about '80 music. I really can't stand them drumz!

Maybe, if Hackett loved Genesis, he could have stayed a little longer in the band, while continuing to produce solo albums...

its not that hackett didnt love genesis, he was interview by a british mag, years ago in which he statedthat collins was getting to commercial..If you listen to phils solo stuff vs steve H, no compearicent.Phil was going thru a bitter divorse at the time, and his 1st solo album was all about it.....Hacketts solo material is genious...........

No solo prog artist has been as successful

(or good) as Rick Wakeman, he is the best.

I also think Steve Hackett, Steve Howe and

Peter Hammil have made some very good

albums.

Robert Wyatt.

Check out Rock Bottom, Matching Mole, End of An Ear.

Continues experimentation started with Soft Machine, in more than one
direction (see melodic distortions of Rock Bottom and free jazz experiment
of End of An Ear), and brings it to a height well beyond most after-progband
soloists.

Phil Collin's "In the Air Tonight" is a great song but I don't like much of his other stuff that I've heard.

that basically sums it up for me as well

anyways.....I'd say Wakey, Gabriel, Hammill, Hackett, Bill Bruford (considering Bruford solo work),

You forgot Wyatt, Nets.

I'll add Roedelius, Moebius, and Eno. although I'm sure there are many many more I am forgetting.

EDIT: Just remembered Hopper and various solo projects and collaborations with other Softs members (e.g. Elton Dean Quintet, Nicra, etc...).

Quality and personality in solo careers? Don't know about the personality side, but quality side my vote would have to go to Neal Morse- still able to produce (what will undoubtably become) classic prog recordings on his solo projects.

[edit] also a plus on Neal's side is that he still has a promising solo career....

Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Seriously. He has a very good career, in my opinion. The debut, Marching Out, Trilogy, Odyssey, Alchemy, and the Concerto album are great albums. Fire and Ice, Attack, and Unleash the Fury aren't bad. I'd say they're good albums, too. Eclipse is meh, ok. Facing the Animal is pretty mediocre. I haven't heard any other of his albums, yet, but The Seventh Sign is supposed to possibly be his best post 80s album. The only other studio albums are Magnum Opus and War to End All Wars, and I've heard some great stuff from those albums. I've heard some mixed opinions on Inspiration, but I have no doubt Trial by Fire, Live, and The Genesis are enjoyable albums as well.
