Hello everyone, I've really just got into prog rock. Liked Barret era Floyd for a long time (along with other psych pop 60's stuff) and from there got into the Waters/Gilmour stuff (meddle, dark side, wywh etc)

Recently I've got into Yes and Genesis, buying (and LOVING) Close To The Edge and Foxtrot. Apart from these I'm pretty green on prog rock, so any reccommendations for albums by these and  particularly other bands would be much appreciated.

Apologies if this request was better suited to another forum/thread.

         Cheers in advance!

Welcome!

I'd like to recommend to more modern bands in respect to the above mentioned classic bands:

  • Porcupine Tree
Similar to Pink Floyd on their albums Voyage 34 and Sky Moves Sideways, a little different on their other albums. Deadwing is quite heavy, I recommend Lightbulb Sun for starters!
  • The Flower Kings
Similar to Yes and Genesis, yet with a more modern sound and many other influences. I recommend Retropolis, Space Revolver and Unfold the Future!

The bands and albums in the Top 100 are a good place to start if you are new to prog.

Welcome.

I am not very much into oldies (in fact, gradually this changes), but i can advise you to listen Camel. You can hear the samples from here: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAN D.asp?band_id=50

Hello Chocky.

What a musical development, first early Floyd, including the captivating Syd Barret-era and then early Yes and Genesis !

My advise is a further exploration of that Seventies progrock scene: Selling England By The Pound and Nursery Crime from Genesis, Yessongs (great live compilation) from Yes, perhaps In The Court Of The Crimson King from King Crimson, indeed Camel (Mirage!), Barclay James Harvest (I recommend their live albums from 1974 and 1977), early Marillion, early IQ (The Wake!), early Steve Hackett solo (Spectral Mornings!) ..

So you have the recommendations, now the money ( ?) ...!

Get Selling england by the Pound by Genesis immediatly! It's been my favorite since the first time I heard it.

Beleive it or not, The Floyd without Waters was alright, Get the Division Bell, one of my favorite albums.
