Iīm having a strange feeling about the members and ex members of the greatest space rock band ever: the Pink Floyd. All of the members (maybe with the exception of Nick Mason) are saying that they are ashamed of some of their greatest work. The pre-Dark Side albums. Waters and Gilmour are totally hating the wonderful Ummagumma and their true masterpiece of groundbreaking rock, Atom Heart Mother (yeah, thatīs the one, not DSOTM) [;))!

I really canīt understand why! In another interview, keyboardist says that he is totally embarrassed by some of his early songs. Especially the fantastic songs from Saucerful of Secrets LP, "See Saw" and "Remember a Day".

Can somebody explain to me why these rock dinosaurs doesīnt like most of their early work which, in my young opinion is more inspiring and great than later albums (The Wall, Animals, FINAL CUT!!!).

Can it be the age? I dont freakinī know!

BTW, My favourite floyd albums:
1. Atom Heart Mother
2. A Saucerful of Secrets
3. Wish you were Here
4. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
5. Obscured by Clouds
6. Ummagumma
7. Dark Side of The Moon
8. More
You canīt say no to the beauty and the beast!!

Yeah, the earlier stuff (Pipers, Saucer, Meddle, ect.) are better than the older (Final Cut, Lapse of Reason, Divison Bell) so I can't understand why they are ashamed.  Maybe they are more ashamed about how much acid they dropped during the time...who knows.

Caugh, caugh... Well, with a few exceptions I can actually understand why they're ashamed of Ummagumma.

I'm not a fan of Dark Side Of The Moon but I do like Animals and the Wall.I havn't heard their earlier albums other then Meddle but I suppose they now see those albums as being experimental and perhaps not as polished as later recordings.Plus as someone else said they dropped a lot of acid which they now regret and maybe don't want the band to be associated with that whole scene.

Actually other than Syd... most of the others didn't drop a lot of acid.  That was all rumor.

Anyway, Richard is probably right in the fact that most of the earlier albums were recorded when the music wasn't even finished... or in earlier stages.. when playing on stage every night they completely overhauled much of the earlier stuff into a more polished sound. The only one that I've heard say he didn't like some of the earlier stuff was Rick Wright and that was because he felt it was not ready to be recorded... However, in most of the interviews I've read from David Gilmour, who wasn't even on Piper..and he has performed Astronomy Domine a few times.. and even included it on Echoes with Bike, See Emily Play, and Arnold Layne, I've never heard Gilmour say that he was ashamed of anything that came before.

A lot of musicians look back on their earlier works and think now it could have been done better.  Whether through concept or new technology.  I don't think they are ashamed of it however.

Vh1- Pink Floyd...Legends.....interview with Richard Wright show he pretty much disregards almost everything Floyd has ever done. With an attitude like that I can now understand why Waters wanted his rear end tossed out of the band.

Kinda makes you wonder what Wright does like from the band...I wonder how he rates his own solo stuff (which personally I find amusing at best).

I know the answer to that as well. Richard Wright has never had enough confidence in his own stuff...even the stuff from Floyd. I either read that in the Pink Floyd picture biograghy book( it was filled with lots of interviews as well-still own the book actually) or a Saucerful of Secrets which I borrowed from a friends years ago. All Richard needed was a cup of self confidence I believe because some of his stuff wasn't bad...eg..Remember a Day, Summer 68, Sysyphus, and The Great Gig in the Sky(personally my favorite tune on Dark Side)

His lack of self confidence he said about himself in an interview as he regarded all the material he did were fillers at best

Oh...in the Legend show he says he still listens to Wish You Were Here on occasion..although he feels WYWH was Dark Side part II and the Wall was part III.

It was during the Wall recordings he got real down and depressed about it. The keyboards you hear on the Wall are not Richard Wright's..his name is still in the credits, however..(a fact that really irritated Roger)

well i guess some of the songs are a little immature (eg small furry animals, bike, the gnome, corporal clegg, a spanish piece, alans psychadelic breakfast) but although the post dark side albums are probably more mature musically and some of the best albums ever i still prefer listening to the early stuff. Ummagumma is my favourite Pink Floyd album, although some of it is a little immature and perhaps embarresing its musically incredible and great to listen to.

To add to my last comment. I think maybe it's because times changed so much. I mean in the 60's it was normal to hear crazy psychadelic pieces about gnomes and bikes because it reflected the acid rock thing that was going on. Things sort of matured in the 70s. I mean stuff like early beatles is a lot crazier than the mature post sgt peppers beatles. I guess as bands grow older they lose the touch of making crazier piece of music and stick to more mature pieces. Still there is nothing to be ashamed of.

The Floyd (with the possible exception of Rickand of course Syd) wasnīt involved with ACID at all. They was against the hippie thing and the only drug they (ab)used was dope. Anyway thereīs a rumour that Rick Wright were a cocain adict in the late 70s.. but who gives a f**k anyway? The early music of Pink Floyd is excellent anyway and some of the best songs are actually written by Wright. But Rick is a very strange guy so... You never know why a person dislike heīs own stuff.. Heīs self-confidence is not too big..

I THINK IT WOULD BE FOR THE LYIRICS...MUSICALLY FLOYD'S MUSIC HAS NEVER BEEN BAD, EVEN THIER EARLIEST WORK. AHM IS SIMPLY GREAT, SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS MAYBE THEIR BEST 60'S ALBUM (YEAH FIRST THAN TPATGOD). MAYBE AS YOU LOOK IN RETROSPECTIVE YOU MIGHT THINK THAT WHAT YOU DID BEFORE IS NOT THAT WORTH AS THE GREATEST THINGS YOU DO NOW. YOU MIGHT ADMIRE GENIUS BUT PROBABLY YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THEM
