Topic: Moog vs Mellotron Posted: January 15 2006 at 17:05 |
Two instruments that were in many ways responsiable for Prog and are synonimous with the genre... which do you prefur?
For me, its got to be the Mellotron. Matching Mole's 'O, Caroline' and Greenslade's 'Featherd Friends' are proof alone of its beutiful sound. Unlike the Moog, it didnt sell out in the 80s as well. But please, what are your thoughts?

Yeah nice poll; good respite from endless 'versus' threads.
I really love both sounds; they are very '70s' but this adds to their appeal for me. There's a real thrill for me at hearing Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman really show off on the Moog, but there's a resonance and beauty from the mellotron. Also, the late 70s Moog sounds were ugly, so the mellotron narrowly wins out.

Has to be the mighty 'tron. Seminal sound of prog rock.
And here's another plug for G-Force's M-tron software. Just the job for those of us that cannot fit a full blown mellotron in the house!

The Moog sounds very spectacular but the Mellotron is superior because it is pure emotion and that's what progrock often needs! I prefer the choir-Mellotron section from the M400, mindblowing and so compelling!
My favorites tracks: BJH-Child Of The Unvierse/King Crimson-The Court Of The Crimson King/Genesis-Afterglow(Seconds Out version)/Museo Rosenbach-Zarathustra/Fantasy-Alanderie/Epidaurus-Actions And Reactions/Outer Limites-The Scene Of Pale Blue/Anekdoten-intro Karelia ....

This is really stupid. Like comparing apples and oranges. They are both tremendous instruments and both have played an enormous roll in the progress of music and in particular prog. Its one thing to state which one you prefer, but it is foolish to say that one is better than the other.

Am I the only one who thought this a pretty absurd thread ? Both
instruments are a crucial part of progressive rock.. It would be like
comparing the guitar and bass guitar ...

Rick Wakeman playing Moog and Tony Banks playing mellotron.
I can't see how can you compare two instruments unles you're asking your son which one he wants to learn (What doesn't apply here because both are keyboard instruments).

A totally ridiculous poll...the moog is a monophonic instrument used for leads, the mellotron for pads (backing chordal passages).
