Sounds of the World Cup
Peter Gabriel will be the musical director of the World Cup opening ceremony in Berlin on June 7, and Brian Eno will write its anthem, the BBC reported. The two-hour show, to cost $29 million, will take place two days before the beginning of the games, and will also feature the soprano Jessye Norman and the hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas. The artistic director of the gala, André Heller, from Austria, has also recruited the avant-garde choreographer Philippe Decouflé, who directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. A total of 132 former World Cup winners are expected to attend the event, including Diego Maradona of Argentina and Pelé of Brazil.
