Methods of Metronome

   Well hello again 

I think this is quite an important topic, especially for those wishing
to prog rock music. It's definetely essential for one to have to great
timing in prog rock music, especially with such abstract time
signatures. The best method of learning to do so, i feel is to use a
metronome. 

Now I've ignored this bloody thing too much, every since I started
playing guitar or piano. Though I decided to commit to it from now on,
every time I practice. However, I'm not sure how I would approach using
the metronome. I mean sure, I can turn on the clicker and play along in
time, although I don't know how that will really help me with my
timing. 

So I want to know your method of using the metronome to improve not only your timing but your skill of your instrument.

	As a classical guitarist, I find the metronome a very important tool for learning the correct timing of a piece. In a band situation, the drums are the metronome. For learning solo pieces set the metronome a lot slower than what it should be- as a guideline I set it at the quickest I can comfortably play the hardest sections. When you have mastered the piece at the slow tempo, gradually adjust the tempo. You will find that you will eventually play the piece a lot better if you go in these baby steps. Whatever you do, don't try to learn the piece at its real pace- this will lead to errors.
