Yeah, another VS poll, but for a good reason.

I've heard four Tull albums, Aqualung, TAAB, HH, and Stormwatch.  I like all of them, (Yes, even Stormwatch.) but one opinion of mine seems to conflict with the norm.

I find Heavy Horses to be absolutely brilliant (almost on par with TAAB).  With Aqualung, on the other hand, I hear a band that is still developing.  The arrangements aren't anywhere NEAR the quality of those on Aqualung; and Heavy Horses sounds much tighter (Thank you Mr. Barlow!).  These are only some of the things that I feel the latter has over the former.  Don't get me wrong, AQ is still great, but why do some folks seem to prefer it over HH?

Just wond'ring. That's aloud isn't it?

I'm with you on this one - as much as I like Aqualung, my favourite Tull phase was the folky period of SFTW/Heavy Horses/Stormwatch.

I agree too.  In fact, I put both Aqualung and Benefit at a much lower vote than many of the albums released afterwards.  There's a real good string of albums from Living in the Past, Thick as A Brick, Passion Play, War Child, Songs From the Wood, and Heavy Horses.

Aqualung is good indeed, but I rate at least Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses, Minstrel in the Gallery, Stormwatch, Crest of a Knave, Roots to Branches, Christmas Album, War Child and Too Old to Rock'n'Roll: Too Young to Die above Aqualung.

Aqualung, by far, one of the best JT albums.

Heavy Horses is so much better than Aqualung. When Aqualung was first released I thrashed it to bits and now it is the least listened to of my JT catalogue. Some great songs on it but it less superior overall and overrated.

Aqualung is all right, but I prefer Heavy Horses (I think it's their second best after Passion Play).  Aqualung would probably still make my top 10, though!

Couple of questions, KoL:

1. Why?

2. Who's that band in your sig? (Excuse my ignorance.)

Hey, I figured out number 2 for myself!  I saved it, and the default file name was PainOfSalvation, so I'm going to assume that's who it is.

I really need to get PP.  I find that I tend to like the contraversial albums.  My favorite albums from Yes and Genesis respectively are Topo and Lamb.

And you, my friend, need to get HH, simply because it's brilliant.

My God! ()... for me Aqualung is simply one of the greatest albums recorded by any band anywhere ... while Heavy Horses is very good, but not even in my Tull Top 5, I think

what a diversity of taste, eh?

I can't quite imagine preferring Heavy Horses (fave tracks title track, Moths and Weathercock) to My God, Locomotive Breath, Aqualung, Hymn #43, Wind-Up, Cross Eyed Mary, Mother Goose and the rest

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

Aqualung!! in my opinion their best. (even better than Taab)

Love 'em both, but gotta go with Aqualung. It just has so many definitive songs: My God, Wind-Up, Mother Goose, Hymn 43, and oh yeah, Aqualung are among my faves of Tull's stuff. It just is one of those records that hangs togther in that classic way. Not that HH doesn't have some great stuff, but Aqualung feels like one focused musical statement, while HH feels (to me at least) like a collection of songs.

Okay, I can see that.
