Topic: Most Uncool Band Posted: November 02 2005 at 01:52 |
"Coolness" factor comes and goes regardless of the quality of the band. Maybe one exception is the Beatles who have remained cool for 40 years. I remember there was about a 5 year period when Led Zeppelin was pretty un-hip. Then they became cool again.

what an eclectic collection of bands.
I love Jefferson Airplane, early Jefferson Starship and Paul Kantner's crew calling themselves Jefferson Starship today, but I did not like Starship at all...so its them, closely followed by Bay city rollers..I still have my tartan trousers at home somewhere

I heard U2 claiming they changed rock guitar. Sorry, but each song contains the same licks, and they just did an upside down version (whatever) of some common guitar licks.
Pretenious, self-indulgent - the critisisms of progressive rock - clearly apply to U2, the band the politically correct glorify. please excuse the spelling mistakes

all of u2s guitar output was just based on Pink Floyds Run Like Hell well im not all that familiar with them but every song ive heard the Edge seems to use alot of delay and thats about it theres actually a few exceptions now that i think about it but yah |

I voted for U2 for two reasons:
1. A few years ago, Bono pronounced that Europe ended with Budapest
(Hungary). This excludes most of the Balkans, including my wife's home,
Bulgaria. What a pompous ass!!
2. Huey Lewis and the News was not listed as a choice. Neither was Hootie and the Blowfish, for that matter...

To be honest, I couldn't care less about conceptions of cool- the modern 'cool' music is basically bad 'indie' (though the term has been blurred) such as Coldplay or Keane, and derivative punk bands.
I predict in many years that rap music will have an 'uncool' stigma attached to it though- already it's become a pale shadow of what it was in the '80s (and I hate the 80s model as well!!!) and has fallen into mindless bravado and braggidocio- a gruesome parody. In my opinion, most of the music about these days shouldn't be revered, and I'm 17!!
Yet, in regard to your poll, I'd find it hard finding anyone who would admit to liking Starship, KC and the Sunshine Band or Bay City Rollers, but Judas Priest are easily one of the most incredible and influential metal bands ever, and WHY were Grand Funk ever uncool?? I think they are as good as any rock band out there!! And to be honest, Triumph aren't particularly well known imo...
I admit to liking Journey, yet with some slight embarassment, as they probably are the cheesiest AOR band ever, so I'd vote for them....
I think Bon Jovi should definitely be on that list- any band that does lyrics like 'you lost more than that on my back seat, baby' should be deemed uncool forever!!
And U2 are way too ubiquitous a band for me- always present on these 'best albums/bands ever' polls, yet their music is way too bland and unadventurous for me- but I don't think they are uncool.

This the most "uncool" poll yet
And why are you lumping the great Judas Priest among all those other bands????

Don't be ashamed Manunkind,JB is awesome.
But as far as R&B and Soul is concerned I am more of a Marvin Gaye fan.Otis Redding was incredible too.

why dont more people hate journey? everyone in that band sucks
except steve smith (the drummer), but that's only because he quit
journey to study jazz.
and why does everyone hate U2? sure Bono is annoying, but the Edge is a serious BAMF.

I'm not voting in this dumb poll because 70's and 80's bands are listed. Now if you included crappy "bands" from the 90's and 00's, when talent took a huge nosedive, that would be a different matter.
