I (like everyone on this forum)is obsessed with all things prog.Iam also a drummer who is planning to travel the world to explore & become established in the global scene.So am wondering,which country has the best scene in terms of the following prog sub genres?:}

Prog rock/metal

Instrumental/improv/avant-garde/experimental

Art rock/mixed media/graphic scores/symphonic

All in all I want to know of the underground talent being released in different countries.Iam 24 years old from northern ireland where every thing musical exists in limited quanties. While I am here,is there anyone here from N.Ireland? Are there any musos/bands  in other countries,in search of drummers?

Some more questions:

Where are the most musical cities, european & beyond?I would like to travel to somewhere where less mainstream scenes are more appreciated & where I can persue a variety of careers in the world of music.I have previous back-rounds as a music student & have worked in a music shop which sells instruments. Are there other sites that deal with such issues?I would also like to expand my musical contacts world wide.

I think it's England. Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, and other most influential prog bands come from England. As for today, I agree with Jody.

I was looking at the Classic Rock magazine, and in the back the concert section had tons of bands I would love to see....most of them prog....curious don't see muh of that happening in the USA.

Even US bands like Spocks and Echolyn seem to enjoy doing the England, Netherlands Germany tour.

So I would say that England is it, the US has the few festivals and thats it, not sure what the scene is in the big cities like NY and LA, but I can tell ya, VEGAS is PROG DEAD.

ITALY has generated the most original in the 70's

PFM , Banco , New Trolls , Orme , Balletto di Bronzo , Museo Rosenbach

If it were a question of the worst prog scene, South Africa would be amongst the front runners.

AS FOR THE SEVENTIES NO WONDER THAT ENGLAND IS THE BEST IN ALL OF THE GENRES IN PROG FOLLOWED BY ITALY, US AND FRANCE WITH SHYLOCK AND HALOWEEN

TODAY, I THINK ITS THE US AND SOUTH AMERICA, EUROPE IS MORE INTERESTING IN THE METAL PROG SECTION.

WHEN WILL GENESIS REUNITE AND BRING BACK LIFE TO SYMPHONIC PROG?

no music, no life
no prog, no good life

Can't even compete with Turkey

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Germany is the most underrated country in '70's prog scene, IMHO... Check out these bands/artists:

Eloy
Wallenstein
Kraftwerk
Cluster
Klaus Schulze
Conrad Schnitzler
Popol Vuh
Embryo
Abacus

and the ones that are already mentioned in my signature

But there is a Turkish band in the Archives - Nekropsi.  There aren't any South African ones here.

Is there a way of getting a list of all the countries available here?  I know you can do it though http://www.progarchives.com/Band-list.asp?country=190 (which is Turkey), and change the country number, but I couldn't find South Africa that way.

late 60's and early 70's - England

mid 70's - Germany

from 90's-> - Sweden

I haven't listened much Italian prog (yet), so I can't form my own opinnion from their material!

If you are really good and will become a world famous virtuous guy, whose music will be hated and loved but by anyone at least respected, you must come to Holland.

That is just egocentric, so I can say I was there when The Progfather came to Holland the first time.

My story of the first concert of Nirvana, where one could stagedive in front of Kurt Cobain is still good for some respect, but is slowly running out and does not have an enormous effect on the younger scene (Kurt who?).
So I need a new one, and you play the main character.
