...(and I fully understand why he is not) which Sub-Genre would his music most naturally fall under?
Crossover? Eclectic? Progressive Electronic? Prog Related? Arguments could be made for all of the above, but if ever anyone transcended genres, it would be Sakamoto. One could spend a lifetime studying his recorded output and still not "get it" all. He's been gone for almost 2 years now and I'm still trying to come to grips with what the musical world has lost. His final album, 12, is quite the soul-shaker.

Hi,
I really don't know ... my only comment, which will sound sad for folks here, is that there are times when the rules are hurting a lot of folks that meant a lot for a lot of musicians and music lovers ... only to be ignored by something that has less to do with music, than it does the artist/artists involved. The same cold be said of The Grateful Dead that has been punished so bad, but at the very least both of these don't need PA or anything else ... GD has their bootlegs and shows that gave "progressive" its name, and RS won an Oscar in his life and will be better remembered for his soundtracks that helped so many films beautifully, which, sadly, is not something that PA is about at all ... I often joke that PA's don't go for art films or special music or even some special theater work ... that is not listed in the many top tens ... I would love to see them listed/added ... but there are way too many folks that don't like the musicality in so many of the folks in GD, for example ... and even DD has been impressed ... PA won't I guess! May be we should have a new thing ... lobster a la king ... something tasty for these folks!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I have to admit that this reminder (that Sakamoto-sama is not officially in the PA database) comes with no little sadness and incredulity. And, Steve, I agree with you on several counts, there: "If ever anyone transcended genres..." and "one could spend a lifetime..." and "… gone almost 2 years and I'm still trying to come to grips with what the musical world has lost."
But I though 12, as sad as it was, paled in comparison to his previous "final" album: async. That one is truly heart-wrenching, haunting yet beautiful, with the sounds of his medical machines, breathing, and NYC apartment noises providing contributions to the musical weaves and songs' rhythms. Amazing! Like, the most organic music about the quandaries, challenges, and frustrations of being a vibrant mind/creative artist while one's body is disintegrating around you. One of my most favorite and influential humans to touch my life. |

You make a great point here, Pedro. Especially due to the fact that the bombast and drama in progressive rock music is exactly what makes it stand out! Theatric/cinematic prog is the best prog! |

I listened to a few of his albums recently. I wouldn't call him prog at all because there are really no rock elements. He's considered modern classical with elements of art pop and glitchy ambient. Some of his stuff is for film scores and the cinematic classical aspects of his works fit into that category quite well. His modern classical techniques include abstract sonorism, reductionism and even some industrial. If he comes across any of the teams i vote on i have to say i'd vote NO for inclusion |

While I would not consider most of what I know of his music to be PA-suitable, I think that I would vote yes for Prog Related. Musically he has made kinds of progressive electronic music, there is some rock at least in his in his debut (more than some others in Progressive Electronic) and of course he was in Yellow Magic Orchestra which is included in our Psych category.
The title track of Thousand Knives is Prog to me, for instance. I made a playlist with that many years ago that included Kraftwerk, Far East Family Band and YMO. Edited by Logan - 13 hours 25 minutes ago at 10:20 |
