OK so, in this thread you ask for examples of prog bands users think are bad? Way to open the Pandora's box...

All MY opinion obviously, it just struck me hard as being a truly failed attempt. That's all.

I understand what you say and even agree (with your example), but I just hope this thread DOES NOT become an invitation for negativity.

Not everyone wants to carefully listen to a nine-minute tome on the plight of the Canadian Prairie Chicken. It makes them nervous and I don't blame them. |

It sounds a bit Canterbury-ish to me. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

There's plenty of more recent so-called prog out there created by (mostly) men with megalomaniacal ambitions - but without the skills, the knowledge or the smarts to convincingly carry their highflying concepts. Compared to more basic popular music double albums with 20 minute + compositions, make prog extra vulnerable to (often well deserved) ridicule. Whenever I hear some modern progressive rock or metal that unsuccessfully tries to pull off a fusion of say theater and fairground music with double bass drums, melodic pop-choruses, industrial keyboards and growling... that's an extra level of awful rarely experienced anywhere else. But I still appreciate ambition and won't name names. Not today at least:)

Yeah that is AWFUL! So what's the big deal? Good prog, bad prog. Listen to the good, flush the bad. This is honestly one of the worst things i've ever heard actually :D If someone's first prog experience was this then surely they would run to the hills. Luckily everyone has heard Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and a few other super popular acts so peeps be knowin' that good prog exists. Sloggy? How about Vomit-inducing :D

Copycat prog rock based on a formula. This stuff started showing up around 1972. From 1966 to 1972 every progressive rock record was a unique adventure and no two bands sounded alike. Buying a new record was somewhat unpredictable in a good way. Then around 72 the formula developed. There was now a bandwagon for people to jump on.
For people who turned to jazz fusion for something new, formulaic copycat fusion started showing up in about 1976. Fortunately there is still a lot of music being made that is fresh and original, but that posted video would not be any of that. Edited by Easy Money - November 19 2023 at 08:03 |
