Topic: Disaster strikes! Posted: October 17 2005 at 17:33 |
No, not Snow Dog returning from his holiday.
Since discovering this site, I've accumulated a fairly large collection
of prog MP3s, but they're all burnt to CDs, not on an iPod (or similiar
thingy). Today, my Sony CD/MP3/Atrac player has decided to stop playing
MP3 and Atrac files, so I'm left with my normal CD collection. The only
consolation is I'm off on 2 weeks hols on Friday so I won't be using it
then anyway. Thank God I got the 3 year extended warranty (only because
the bloke in Dixons let me have it for a tenner) and thank Blacksword
that I got the 2 Renaissance CDs last week.
Anyone else had any MP3-related mishaps (like not having backups of your favourite files)?

Oh, how I've missed conversations like these over the last couple of weeks!
Oi Snowy, I haven't got your postcard yet!
Getting serious for a moment (!), it's probably about time I got a proper MP3 player. Since I've already got loads of MP3s on CD, I guess I shouldn't go down the iPod route. Any recommendations horza? Is there a good 20Gb player that will work with my old Windows 98 PC and USB connection?

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Hi Bilek,
I don't know what "afiyet olsun" means, but it should be a funny expression...

Not exactly funny, but it should make the sense in its context. There are 2 reasons why I wrote it in Turkish: 1: it cannot be translated into English directly. They usually say "Enjoy your luch (dinner, whatever)", but it is also a translation of French "Bon Appetite"... Likewise, "Aifyet olsun" in Turkish! 2: I don't know where exactly Snow Dog went for holiday, but it seems he came over here! (or maybe Greece, where he can find Turkish delight as well!) If he came here, he should've learnt the expression.
keep on progging!

It was among my first guesses (Antalya in general)... Next time you come near Istanbul (better if you come "in" Istanbul) drop me a PM... I want to see a progger in the flesh

oooh yeah don't get me started man.
I got a creative mp3 hdd 20gb and after a month it stopped working and was replaced with a sony walkman same spec.
now my point is this, the software with the creative was very good and also the machine was able to use windows media player, but the hardware went kaput. the hardware with the sony is possibly better but sonicstage which is sony's bundled software is COMPLETE PANTS!!!!! I didn't realise the atrac situation before buying (my own fault) and since my computer blew up and i lost all my mp3 files i can't restore them from my player (and no backups) does anyone else think sony software is crap or do we have any workarounds?

Well, the first time I used the Sony Sonicstage software, I tried to put about 20 of my CDs onto one in Atrac format. I left it running when I went to bed and it was still in the same place the next morning!
It seems to work okay if you do about 3-4 CDs at a time otherwise it just hangs. It does have a better compression ratio and sounds better than MP3. I think I'd stick to MP3 however as it's more widespread. Atrac seems to be the music equivalent of Betamax.
