Is there anything more unfunny than a Shakespearean comedy? Scottish Neo Prog band Comedy of Errors didn't have much to laugh about in the mid-1980's either. Their 1986 mini-album of demo versions turned out to be about as popular as a vegan in a meat-packing plant, and they could only look on with envy as their fellow Scottish proggers Abel Ganz and Pallas soared up to palatial heights of fame. In their dreams! Anyway, Comedy of Errors' chief songwriter and vocalist Jim Cairney was ordered to go to his room and not to emerge again until he'd written some good songs, and not wanting to Disobey or disappoint his fans and bandmates, he re-emerged 25 years later with a great album, telling tall tales of supernatural Fanfare & Fantasy, and keeping the Spirit of Neo Prog going well into the 21st century. And now, if we travel in the Time Machine to the present day, we find that Comedy of Errors are now more popular than Shakespeare! At least at ProgArchives they are anyway. Smile

What? Shakespeare's comedies unfunny? You should read them, they're often brilliantly funny!

Although I've listened to some of Comedy of Errors' albums they did since 2011, I must admit they never stuck to me very long: generally very pleasant, but also a bit generic.
I've always loved their 1986 mini album, which I still play every once in a while. The sound quality is lousy, but the songs are great. This mini album is much more than just a collection of demos; call at an EP, if you wish. That rip-off compilation CD from 1988 has some demos added to the songs of this mini album (done without the knowledge nor consent of the band, IFAIK, and with the very amateurish mistakes of putting one song twice on the CD and leaving out the last song (The Student Prince) - it does not do justice to the band's work. To me they were on the level of Pallas and Twelfth Night in originality and songwriting quality. It is a pity they didn't get the chance to put more music out in those days.

Their Time Machine album takes some snippets of the mini-album's songs and themes to rework them into new songs. It's nicely done and a good album indeed. They also have a new album out just this summer: Threnody for a Dead Queen. Quite nice too, but I still prefer that mini album!

I have four albums by this group, the ones released from 2011 to 2017. I like Fanfare & Fantasy the best of these. There are pants inside my pants.

^ Thanks Scot! It's a Shakespearean tragedy that I wasn't aware Comedy of Errors has a new album out - until now that is. Thumbs Up
