I wanted to be explicit in the title, because if one (or both) is married, it's an added variable that I'm not really looking for. Almost every movie is a love story, but so many are so similar, and it gets boring. I think it helps if each actor is an individual, too.

Any decade. Any country.

"Buffalo '66" is my pick.

Hi,

Not quite the same thing, and slightly off the topic request (I dislike rom/coms ... isn't that what they are called?) ... but this is the story of one woman's life ... and the movie is a beaut and then some! It deserves mention here, even though it is slightly off the mark, but the film itself was much more valuable and important, specially as the actress passed away shortly after the film was finished.

A WOMAN'S TALE (1971) Directed by Paul Cox ... with Sheila Florance .... it makes a lot of the stuff mentioned really weak in my book ... and seeing someone literally give herself up to acting to the end ... is something that is simply ... insane and amazing!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

^ If you mean Kaurismäki's film with that title then yes, I've seen it and it fits the bill too. Like some of his other films, actually: the unhilariously hilarious I Hired a Contract Killer, or The Man Without a Past, Lights in the Dusk, and still some others. Although they're often about a man meeting a woman, they're also - and maybe especially - about missed opportunities...

It's got to be Roy Andersson's 1970 feature film debut: En kärlekshistoria (A Swedish Love Story)

Glad you mention this. I just saw it on DVD with my lady friend. We saw an excellent stage production in our hometown Tampere last winter.
The film starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer is quite OK, but we both very much prefer the original play Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (1987) by Terrence McNally, who also wrote the movie screenplay.
Unlike the comedy oriented film, the play entirely takes place in a single night in Frankie's home (where the film finally ends).

Richard Linklater's Before trilogy starring Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy is lovely, especially the first one, Before Sunrise (1995).

Another and really unique film fitting the criteria would be Woman of the Dunes, a film from 1964 by Hiroshi Teshigahara, part of the very interesting Japanese New Wave of that period.

Hi,

In The Realm of the Senses?

Side bit ... Guy Guden's satire on Space Pirate Radio is better!

The male lead in that classic art house film was actually married, albeit estranged.  On a side note it's one of those films that every true movie lover should see.
