Excuse my American bias, but I'd just been watching some of my old favorite films with acting performances that are hauntingly scary--not monsters or special effects but ACTING!

Name some of your favorite SCARY acting performances.

Here are mine (in no particular order):
Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds
Edward Norton as Aaron/Roy in Primal Fear
Morgan Freeman as "Fast Black" in Mean Streets
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lamb
Ray Liotta as Ray Sinclair in Something Wild
Joe Pesci as Tommy DeVito in Goodfellas
Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goth in Schindler's List
Daniel Day-Lewis as "Bill the Butcher" in Streets of New York (and Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood)
John Malkovic as "Booth" in In the Line of Fire
Rutger Hauer as "Roy" in Blade Runner
J.K. Simmons as Terrence Fletcher in Whiplash
Javier Barden as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men
Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber in Die Hard
Samuel Jackson as Ordell Robbie in Jackie Brown

Waltz can be deeply chilling, and not just as a Nazi.  Hopkins too because he's such a superb talent.  But for me on a more physical level ...

I might have to go with The Joker from 'The Dark Knight', I'd also throw 'The Prestige' in there, because it's almost like everyone is the villain, even the main characters.... the ending is amazing.

Good choice with Heath Ledger--though the performance never scared me so much as wowed me.
I don't know "The Prestige" so I'll have to check it out to see what you're talking about.

I forgot to mention Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in America. Such an unexpected twist!

I found Joaquin Phoenix's version scarier.

Until I saw Runaway,  I never realised Gene Simmons looks even more scary without the make-up. Tongue

How about Christian Redl as the Master in "Krabat"? I read the book when I was thirteen, and I had nightmares after that.

Here the trailer:

Oh, and another one that I am not certain will count, but the villain is brilliant. "Im Schmerz geboren" ("Born in Pain") is actually an episode of "Tatort" ("Scene of the Crime"), a German TV-series that has been around since 1970. All episodes are full movie length. Ulrich Matthes plays Richard Harloff who is as cold as ice. Here the trailer:

I'd like to add Jean Gabin as Vittorio Manalese, a mafia boss, in "Le clan des Siciliens" ("The Sicilian Clan"). his performance makes Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone in "The Godfather" appear like a softie

In real life confrontation, characters that would leave one in despair like Leatherface and Annie Wilkes (Misery) could scare me the most.

In my childhood, Michael Myers was truly frightening for me.

Also, Elmo Blatch of The Shawshank Redemption... Really great and unsettling acting of him there. I wouldn't want our paths to cross with that character, lol.

Oh, how could I forget the Joker of Batman (1989). Whilst, he was my childhood nightmare and wouldn't scare me anymore.
