Hello all,

I've being going through kind of a phase of thinking about all the types of media I consume, reducing social media I don't find fulfilling, etc. 

Simultaneously, someone mentioned Solstice which I've spent a lot of time with in the last weeks, and I realized that at 50+ years, I am leaning towards more positive music. Life is hard enough, I don't need the same nastiness that appealed to me when I was younger, or at least not all the time.

This morning I went back to Moon Safari's Blomljud album which may be the happiest music I own, and it just hit the right note for me.

So I'm wondering - what is your favorite prog for raising your spirits. Uplifting but not saccharine? Obviously, tastes will vary but as a mostly metal guy, I'm exploring some new territory.

Gryphon's music is surely uplifting for me.

Such crazy music also is elating for me, depending on my mood.

Various Magma. As an album Magma's Attahk takes me to a jovial place. It helps too that I played it a lot while lounging by the pool at a terrific all-inclusive resort in Mexico.

I've listened to quite a bit of Magma. I must say that was one of the last bands I expected to find in this thread. But I always think MDK style and they had a long career with different sides to the sound.

 I don't think I've heard Attahk though. I'll check it out.

Idk if you've heard them already but check out Santana. A lot of their songs are some fun, happy, Latino rock that I have been loving for a while.

Definitely a lot of Magma and Pat Metheny for me. 

I find Ryuichi Sakamoto's music uplifting in a very beautiful, spiritual/contemplative, human potential kind of way. 

It's hard to top King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard for sheer uplifting make-you-want-to-dance-ness--though my boys from Boone, NC, Unaka Prong, also have a gift for cheering me up and getting me to want to dance.

I find a lot of Magma so much fun and exuberant -- delightful; puts a smile on my face Although Scat may be an acquired taste that some might not wish to acquire, when Cristian Vander does his scat-attahk [sic] in a classic like "Hhai", it fills me with joy.



This is the first Magma track I fell for, Iss Lansei Doia.



I find plenty of Magma joyous across the discography. Magma is mostly what I would call feel-good music to me, but then I often do have a penchant for darker, melancholic music, and it may partially be a comparative thing. MDK can be quite joyous to me.

Yesterday I was listening to black midi's Hellfire (I love this band more and more and more) and I find that and other black midi makes me happy. And lots of Frank Zappa, a lot of Canterbury Scene music, Supersister for instance, various Gong, and Samla Mammas Manna.

I find Ayreon's albums to be very uplifting, but on Another Day I might choose Dream Theater. Smile

I find everything by Big Big Train uplifting, the ten albums with Dave Longdon especially are never far away from my general orbit of listening.

I consulted my Top-Prog list to see where I had placed my favorite "positive vibe" songs, and there right next to each other (at 39 and 40) were two of the best...

For Mixed Up Man of the Mountains I have a note: "... My spirit is free--don't you know that I can fly'.. gets me every time!"   I posted the shorter version below--longer version might be a little better.

(incidentally, if you haven't taken a dive into Canterbury Scene, most of it is very positive in a quirky sophisticated way.  Recommended).

The note I have for Four Holes in the Ground reads "...wonderfully positive, almost guaranteed spirit-lifter"

I have the English lyrics version (as posted below), but many think the Italian version is better (not sure I agree, at least not for this tune).

Khan is one of my all time favorites - Canterbury can be hit or miss for me but that Khan album definitely hits it for me.

King Gizzard is also hit and miss for me but that's because they cover such a broad swath. I admire them for that but not everything connects for me. 

I'll check out the PFM, I don't know that one and haven't listen to them in awhile.

As Logan, Magma for sure. And Black Midi - Hellfire is the wildest ride Such a joy to listen to. Almost all of Canterbury including the non-Canterburian Cos, Moving Gelatine Plates, Supersister...

+tons of EARLY 1970's jazz rock-fusion, Björn J:son Lindh, Santana, Placebo, Nucelus, Joe Farrell, Return to Forever, + some later ones like (maybe it's called Indo/Raga) Oriental Wind, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Clivage. Brother Ah

But I find loads of prog uplifting. Prog's often got a cathartic quality that most popular music don't. And I actually find VdGG, King Crimson... even Art Zoyd and Swans uplifitng. But I guess it's not the bands I would suggest to someone asking for something uplifting.
